Schizophrenia or Wilson's disease?

Posted by scribble'ntweak on October 18, 2004, at 18:10:59

I have been diagnosed schizophrenic and have been taking 10 mg. Abilify successfully for over a year. Recently I had a systemic heavy metal test done and it came back with very high copper levels. I looked up copper toxicity in the Merck Manual and found that it says something like "the symptoms of high copper levels are indistinguishable from schizophrenia." If this is true, should I be treated for Schizophrenia or Wilson's disease? The treatment for the schizophrenia is working...wouldn't it not be if it were Wilson's disease?

Yes. you should defintely bring this to your doctor and do some heavy metal chelating to get the copper out.

This can indeed cause schizophrenia. Even though the Ablify is working, you should do this. Ask your doctor to look into this ASAP.

maybe it was a 2 for one deal? You need both treatments. Mental disorders come from real life situations.
