Ok, please help me with Wellbutrin reaction

Posted by owenus32 on November 30, 2004, at 9:41:38

I've been on it about 8 or 9 days and yesterday I got sever itching and welts where I scratched it. I took claritin and used cortsone cream and itchiness pretty much went away. Today, though my hands, especially my fingers, feel "swollen" and uncordinated. Is this dangerous or just side affects and will they go away??? Please answer me

Hello,

I strongly believe that you should stop taking the Wellbutrin because your symptoms suggest that you are allergic to it. You need to consult your doctor. Itching and urticaria (hives) are relatively common side effects of bupropion but serious skin reactions can also occur. The swelling of your hands may be a form of angioedema.

I am not a doctor but if I was in your position I wouldn't take any more doses of Wellbutrin. Your symptoms should resolve soon after you have stopped the medication. I'm sure your doctor would be willing to prescribe a different drug instead. Someone on psycho-babble recently reported that their symptoms improved when they transferred to a different preparation which also contained bupropion. Even so, the safest thing to do would be to stop the medication.

All the best..
Ed.

PS. You sound worried, please make an appointment to see your doctor/GP/pdoc.

Hi.....

I hope I haven't worried you. I just want you to be safe. People have variable experiences with the Wellbutrin rash, sometimes it disappears, sometimes it gets worse.

Regards,
Ed.

I told the doc really itchy and welts on hip and he said stop taking it I'm allergic. Kinda sucks because it lit a fire under my ash, which I need and it doesn't have sexual side-affects.
Thanks though

you have to stop taking this you are allergic and every pill you take the worse it will get. I know because this happened to me. I broke out in huge welts all over my body, my hands and feet were very swollen also. What you need to do is (if you like this med and want to keep taking it) quit for a month and let it get out of your system. Start taking it again but only with 10mg of Zyrtec. Claritin didn't keep the reaction from happening but the Zyrtec did.
