I saw my pdoc today, and he said he went to a conference where they disclosed some research findings. The findings said that Neurontin doesn't work as a mood stabilizer. He said the only effects it has is as a placebo.
Has anyone else heard anything to this affect, or to the opposite?

Yes there are lawsuits out right now on this subject. You may want to google the subject...This issue came to light wow over a year ago I saw some ex-sales rep on T.V exposing this to the show and all...I do take Neurontin for sleep at bedtime only and it helps with that ,.,,it IS an off label use...to me it helps anxiety a tad too so maybe in some it helps but as you may be BP (I say this only cause you are asking on stablizer) I would listen to my PDOC and avoid. Good luck

My pdoc said the same thing...
Neurontin is not a mood stabilizer...
It's basically a hypnotic. Works for seizures too.

I've never come across any convincing research suggesting that Neurontin is an effective anti-manic.

This is old news. The NIMH reached this conclusion four years ago. However, they did find that Neurontin can be somewhat helpful as an augmentor of Lamictal.

This may sound like a commercial, but I can attest to this drug's phenomenal effectiveness in knocking out neuropathic (physical) pain.

Hello,
Neurontin might be helpful for a few patients with bipolar disorder, mainly as a treatment for anxiety. In general, it's not a good treatment for mania.

Hi,
But neuropathic pain is an approved indication for Neurontin! I have a friend who suffers from neuropathic pain. Sadly, gabapentin didn't help and the side effects were intolerable.

Just curious--could you say what the cause of your friend's neuropathic pain is?

I was prescribed neurontin for migraines. It worked, sort of. Caused me to feel and act pretty dumb. Also made me ravenous. I decided to go off of it, and my doc said I could just quit without tapering, so I did. This, my friends, dropped my into the deepest, darkest, depression I have ever felt in my life. Nearly destoyed me and my family. I've had to be on anti-depressants ever since. Beware neurontin. If you take it, please come off gently.
