Lamictal rash? What should I do?

Posted by becksA on December 12, 2004, at 21:49:35

I started Lamictal about 4 - 6 weeks ago now, and yesterday I upped my dose from 100 to 150mg daily. When starting it up, for the first few weeks I started the increase VERY slowly. I only notice a rash begin to develop over this past week. I'm not positive it's from the lamictal, but I can only assume. It's only in one spot, around my mouth, almost as if I were to grow a goatee and moustache it would be hidden...It's at the point now where it just feels very dry and you can only see a faint redness. It's not itchy.
If you get this rash, does it mean Lamictal will not be possible for you, or does it mean you've reached your maximum dose, or that you just need to increase it more gradually? I really think it is starting to help so I'd like to stay on it.

Thanks

I think you're supposed to let your doctor know immediately. I was given some Lamictal samples recently, which I'm not taking, but that's what the doctor told me to do in case of rash.

Yeah I'm gonna leave him a message...I read some old posts about it, and it sounds like if you go about it the right way, it acts just like another side effect that goes away with time?...im hoping...

From what I understand, for some lowering the dose allows this symptom to disappear--so developing a rash may not be an indication that the drug is a no-no, maybe just upping the dose from 100 will cease being an otion. Having said that, my pdoc emphasised that this rash can be serious--even life-threatening in those very rare cases, so definitely seek guidance--and at least I would steo back from the 150 mg dose.

I am at 50 mg and even at this dose it has helped quite a bit, I am relieved to say. No indications of a rash...

I feel like it began to help at 100, and I began slowly increasing up to 150, doing 125 every other day, then every day, then i'll go 150 every other day, etc. the rash has gotten better, if anything, from last week, so im gonna stick to it slowly and see what happens.

When you get the rash you are supposed to stop lamictal immediatly, hope it goes away. I think the rash can kill you. You also might want to get it treated by a doctor. If the rash proves not to be related to the medicine, you can start taking it again.

I verified it all with my doctor. I am going to continue the slow increase. As I said, the rash was never bad at all, and appears to be getting better anyway. If the rash begins to worsen again, he wants me to call him back. I was reading numbers last night where 1 in 10 get this as a harmless side effect in the beginning, and 1 in 1000 get it where it turns into SJS, the fatal disease. so i'm in the clear for now.
