Oh No! I'm Really OCD!

Posted by Phillipa on January 8, 2005, at 18:01:58

They say to be a nurse or doctor you have to be OCD. Well, I really am, and after asking doc's about Luvox, I'm told it's "not Popular". That leaves only Anafranil, or the word that SSRI's in general help with this problem. But, I count in my head constantly, have to eat a certain number of things in a certain way, do the exact same things at the same time each day. And now I'lm addicted to this Board! I REALLY AM OCD! What can I do to relieve my anxiety so I can Live? Thanks for your help. Phillipa

Hello!

I've had OCD on and off for a long time. Thankfully, I don't have it at the moment.

Have you ever been on a high dose of an SSRI? Did it help with your OCD symptoms?

Yes Ed, about 6 years ago they put me on Luvox starting at 50mg, and I went up to 200mg. It did help, and I thought I was doing well. I was also attending a "Group" and they told us to only tackle one thing each and relax. I did what they said and the next time I saw the pdoc he said I was "Catatonic" and took me off it. He really just wanted me for a l0 person study of Celexa as it was new to the market. I felt sick the whole month I was on it. After that I went back on it with a different pdoc, and felt good for around 3 weeks and then my anxiety began to return. I asked to try it now but the doctors said it is not popular, and I just read the US pulled it off the Market under the trade name. Do you know anything about this? Fondly, Phillipa O

Hi!

Yes, I think the brand name Luvox has been withdrawn from the market in the US- at least temporarily. I'm not sure why but I don't think that it is serious. Generic fluvoxamine is still available- you could get a prescription for a generic. Fluvoxamine tends to cause worse withdrawal symptoms than other SSRIs. Have you ever done well on any of the other SSRIs?

The very first time I took Paxil at l0mg I did well after about 3 months of getting used to it. It was awful. My pdoc put me on 25mg of Lopresser first so I could tolerate it. I'm very med sensitive. I was taking .5Xanax 3 or 4 times a day with it. I weaned myself off it after about l l/2yrs. I had more energy off it and was working and feeling great. Also was drinking beer at night after work. I don't drink now. Now Paxil doesn't seem to do anything. I've tried the other SSRI's short term and they made me more anxious. Fondly Phillipa O

I took Luvox up until recently for some OCD parts of a condition and then switched to Cymbalta more recently. Most of the Luvox was generic.

The posting made me curious, there's an odd language on a docket at the FDA

http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/98fr/03-22359.htm

that makes reference to Solvay's NDA (I guess renewal of patent) being inconsistent but the drug manufacture not being in question, and that's about it. I guess it was dropped. Another dour letter from some woman who blamed Luvox for her son almost leaping from a window -- I question these one-sided SSRI man bites dog complaints, but I digress. Its still being manufactured by at least one generic company, that I know.

For me it did stop ruminative thinking to an extent I think. It also was a medication of choice of the SSRIs because it was the more sedating, i.e. least on the jumpy spectrum... SSRIs being dual use agents there always seems to be a tradeoff... treat your depression more, or your anxiety, or a bit of both but not all.

As a lifetime sufferer of OCD (as most all who have experienced an episode are), of course, I remind that the tools of behaviour therapy are definately something to add to medication regimes. Not easy to do, but something you take with you on your journey in life to prevent another outbreak.

Warmest regards.
