Okay. So I just added 25 mgs to my cocktail of Trileptal and Desipramine and I have a few questions.
1) What's the deal with weight gain (at this dose)? I've heard conflicting reports. And, if weight gain IS a factor at 25 mgs, is that because of increased appetite or metabolic slowdown or both?
2) So far, I'm sleeping like a baby every night - for the first time in years. Will this always be the case or will this side effect go away and require increasing doses to fall asleep? How long does it take before that occurs, if it does?
3) Should my antidepressant prevent the depression that can sometimes occur with Seroquel?
4) What's the risk for tardive dyskenesia?
5) I think there is a P450 interaction between Seroquel and Trileptal. Can anyone clarify that for me?
Any question anyone could answer would be fantastic. Thank you so much!

This med was suggested to me for sleep also. I also would love others expertise as to side effects, etc. I took 25mg once and I was "drunk" the whole next day, and literally had to sleep it off. Have you taken any yet? What's the lowest dose you can take? Phillipa

MM, 25MG IS A LOW DOSE , SO THE RISK IS ALMOST UNEXISTENT

I was on Seroquel for a couple of years. I think I was on a fairly hefty dose though. I gained a lot of weight - but as I say I was on a fairly hefty dose and I am quite sensitive to gaining weight with medications. I believe it changed my metabolism rather than my appetite. I have had a Dr tell me that that was rubbish, that it must have altered my eating habits, but I don't believe him :-)
I was also on Imovane at the time so I am not sure about it in relation to sleep.
I would think the risk for Tardive D would be fairly low. That was more to do with the 'older' anti-psychotics and so the newer ones have a reduced risk. Also you are on a low amount. Also that tends to develop in people who have been on the medication for quite a few years.
I found the medication to be helpful.
Hope it works out for you.

I started on 25 mgs, it did make me groggy the next day but I've been dealing with Trileptal-induced grogginess for over a year now so was able to deal with it.
You know you can cut the pills in half and take 12.5 mgs, or even in quarters (though this might be tough!) and take about 6 mgs. I read some old posts where people did this.

How long does it take before that occurs, if it does? No. I believe the effect will last, maybe you might need to increase to 50mg or 75mg, but I think sedation will stay...it's a sedative drug.

> 3) Should my antidepressant prevent the depression that can sometimes occur with Seroquel?Depression occuring with Seroquel??? Seroquel is much much much more likely to have an antidepressant response...

almost non-existant at all doses. Actually Seroquel is the only antipsychotic where the occurence of TD was no higher than placebo. Don't even worry about that mate.
> 5) I think there is a P450 interaction between Seroquel and Trileptal. Can anyone clarify that for me?I don't think their is, but I would have to check my medical texts to give a positive answer.

I take Seroquel at night for sleep, and it does help me to fall asleep. When I started on it about a year ago, 25mg would put me out (was taking 10mg/day of Lexapro) Now it takes more like 75mg (and I have moved up to 20mg/day Lexapro).
I think my increased dosage of Seroquel has more to do with my Lexapro dosage than anything else.
The more Lex, the more Seroquel needed at night.Hope this helps

Ever since I started Seroquel, I've had a yeast infection. Treated it with TWO 3-day Monistat kits and it hasn't gone away! Looked up Seroquel's possible side effects and sure enough, one of the rare ones is vaginal yeast infection.
Has anyone ever had this happen with any med and what did you do?!

I have been taking 50mg of Seroquel at night for sleep for nearly a year. Some nights I take 100mg, but generally 50. The effect doesn't seem to wear off.
Seroquel is an atypical antipsychotic drug generally used for schizophrenia. Theraputic doses are in the hundreds of milligrams. My research of peoples' experiences seems to indicate that sedation decreases with increased dosages.
I have not had any or little weight gain from Seroquel.
Seroquel SHOULDN'T cause depression.
I cannot verify your other questions...
Good luck!

eek! sorry to hear about this! maybe talk to your pdoc or PCP? i know it's a personal topic, and i would probably be hesitant or embarrassed, but as for quick answers and feeling better, that might be the most direct way.
i just added seroquel, too, a few nights ago. it's mostly for sleep. the first night, i took 50mg and still woke up really early and couldn't sleep more. yesterday, i took 100mg, and though i sleep for longer overall, i woke up really often, and it wasn't too restful.
when i first tried seroquel at 25 or 50mg awhile ago, it knocked me out, almost as bad as on zyprexa, but without the weight gain or as much cognitive dysfunction. i don't really understand why all my drug tolerances, especially for sedative-type meds, are kicking in all at once after two or more years on the same dose. if anything, i would think my body would be more sensitive to meds because it's taken a lot of hits recently, my metabolism has changed, and i had a period of rapid and excessive weight loss and i'm still working on gaining it back.
seems like maybe when your mind is more disorganized and really 'needs' a med, you can maybe tolerate a higher dose. that has been the case for me, especially with things like lithium or haldol. as one pdoc said to me, "no one asks for haldol unless they need it." i don't know anything about dose-dependent side effects and whether it has that inverse relation seen in, say, remeron. i've been on all the atypicals except for geodon, and the side effects seem positively correlated to dose except for abilify. i wasn't on it for long, but i felt sleepier on the lower dose. it may have just been my body's getting used to the drug.
anyway, good luck! let me know how it works for you!

Hi,
I am just coming off Seroquel.
1) I was about 98lbs to start, then my weight increased by about 28lbs when I went on Zyprexa (but it is notorious for weight gain!). When I stopped and went onto Seroquel, I didn't go back to my former weight. I stayed at around 126lbs, maybe increased by about another 7lbs. I found that this was due to two main reasons: my appetite stayed nearly as good as it was on Zyprexa (ie: MUCH better than it was on no AP). Food tasted much better. Secondly, I had absolutely no energy or motivation so I did no real exercise. I slept ALL the time.
2) He he he, why do people say "slept like a baby"? That's so funny. Ironic really, as babys don't actually sleep well do they! They wake up screaming all through the night! Ah what weird sayings we have! Anyway as I was just starting to get onto, YES, sleep is great on Seroquel! I slept all day long. I was on 750mg. I would take 450mg at night and promptly fall asleep. I'd be woken up by my kind mum at about 7am the next day and take my morning 300mg. However, this then knocked me out until about 1pm in the afternoon. BAD NEWS. However, this was at 750mg. At lower doses, I found that I slept a more *normal* amount. Anyway this is the main reason I am changing to a new AP.
3) No I didn't find Seroquel made me depressed. On the contrary, it had a strong antidepressant effect for me.
4) I don't know, I would guess very low.
5) I don't know.
One added bonus is that Seroquel is great for your skin!! I suffer from bouts of acne, and Seroquel gave me lovely clear skin. Someone on babble said this is probably to do with lowering testosterone levels, which normally causes spots.
I didn't get a yeast infection because of Seroquel, but I get them ALL THE TIME anyway! So annoying. I take antibiotics, and that can cause it. I just find myself always using the cream and doing the pessarys. It's quite easy. Do you live in the UK? You don't even need to go to the doctor. Just go and get some Cannisten at the chemist. There is this "super-duper one tablet fixes all" available, but it costs about £12, which is ridiculous I think. So I just stick with the old-fashioned creams and all that. Anyway, don't worry about it. Stress agrivates things. Drink lots of cranberry juice too! That is thought to be good.
Hope all goes well.
Lots of love. Kate xxx
