a schizophrenic illness - what does THAT mean?

Posted by pretty_paints on February 6, 2005, at 6:23:13

Yo people.

I have heard this mentioned.

What does it mean, "a schizophrenic illness" - does it include ALL psychotic disorders, or just a few of them, or what??

Anyone know?

Thanks a lot to anyone brainy who knows :) xxx

When I think of schizophrenia, I think of a diagnosis in and of itself. This disorder being defined by an extreme altering of reality with key points being delusional/psychotic thinking, hallucinations -usually auditory, and disorganized thought and speech patterns.

I think one could have multiple mental illnesses and symptoms could overlap, but I'm thinking the degree of symptoms is probably the key point. Maybe the symptom overlap is where the referrence to: "schizophrenic illness" is derived. I'm not sure if that particular way of terming is an actual diagnosis versus more a description.

Also, psych meds overlap in their use and not all taking antipsychotics have actual psychosis.

I'm no expert and others may say different, but that's my understanding.

I only know of two schizophrenic illnesses. The different types of schizophrenia itself (paranoid, etc...) and schizoaffective dissorder, which can count as a "schizophrenic illness."

Hope that helps,

Why do the antipsychotics help in other illnesses? Fondly, Phillipa

There is probably some very deep answers to that one - some involving the various neurochemicals and areas of the brian - and some that we just don't know why. But, I choose to think it's the very complex and interconnectedness of the brain processes involved: thoughts, feelings, mood, preceptions. So, there are overlapping actions when it comes to psych meds.

It must be very complex. They tried to get me to sleep on seroquel while in the hospital. I took up to l00mg at bedtime. The funny thing is that a couple of days after coming home about 7 days off seroquel, my lips shriveled up and became very dry, and every wrinkle in my face was like a prune. Could the anti-hystamine effects of seroquel still been in my system.? Fondly, Phillipa

I'm sorry, I really don't know, but someone here might.

hey! I think its kinda disturbing that they're using antipsychotics for bipolar AGAIN (the introduction of lithium into this country in the early 70's ended the use of haldol/thorazine type drugs for bipolar maintenance therapy, and really improved the lives of a lot of people with bipolar), and other conditions off-label-anxiety, bipolar II, depression, sleep disorders, etc. The atypicals still carry the risk of tardive dyskinesia, akathisia, etc., and, more importantly, tend to cause cognitive impairment and other deficits (this is called Neuroleptic Induced Deficit Syndrome). Anyway, the current theory is that schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, especially type I with psychotic episodes, are genetically linked and similar...but apparently not similar enough to be the same illness. Sooo, antipsychotics will work for bipolar, and sometimes drugs such as lamictal will work in conjunction with antipsychotics for schizophrenia. My problems? There is no diagnostic test that shows bipolar or schizophrenia in the brain. Its up to the clinician to spot it. Schizophrenia is heavily overrepresented among the poor and minorities, and always has been..some psychiatrists try to explain this away with talk of genetics (unproven) or biological factors (unproven), but as a future sociologist, my mind thinks this: this is absolute pseudo-scientific BS. Sure, diagnosis the poor as schizophrenic and then tell us its "genetic". What does this mean? That the poor come from a crazier gene pool than the rest of us? Please. Given psychiatry's history of lobotomies (didn't stop until the 70's), insulin treatments, metrozol therapy, tooth extraction (didn't stop until 50s), forced-sterilization, etc., everyone should be careful when seeking treatment.
