I've had a plethora of physical and mental symptoms which became quite upsetting of late. Docs said it was anxiety. I said I didn't agree, but had no evidence of anything else.
Finally, today I went to an urgent care facility for mild ear symptoms -- I've been having them for quite some time.
The doc looked in my throat and said I had an infection, and promptly gave me an rx for doxycycline. No culture. Said it was strep. My throat wasn't sore.
Anyway, has anyone had a worsening of their dep./anxiety due to a bacterial infection? Seems possible given that strep can cause OCD in children, and that "mentally ill" persons have disordered immune systems.
I've experienced it with viral infections, but not with bacterial ones.

Definitely, actually recently I've been suffering from a recurring infection, and before there were any physical symptoms I could tell it was coming back because I'd get very agitated/anxious. I tried to explain this to my Doctor, and he thought I was being ridiculous, I was right every time though.

Glad to know that I'm not the only one. My docs tend to say: yes you have an infection but that doesn't explain your brain symptoms (I prefer brain disorders to mental illness). My former doc was just the opposite - he felt that viruses were prime suspects in the etiology of brain disorders.

It's infuriating isn't it? It's logical that viruses could be suspect, but many doctors like my G.P make the connection by thinking she's not just depressed, she's so nuts she thinks she can intuit an infection entering her system" He actually accused me of having delusions, I had to change Doctors and by then I was so sick my lymph glands were infected. I still can't sleep at night I get so angry..

Sounds familiar: I was dxed with somatoform at a University outpatient clinic. I didn't learn of it until later. One of the pdocs actually checked the box for "delusional". That was simply ludicrous. I was later dxed with 3 conditions that could explain the "somatoform".

I'm sorry you had to go through that, there aren't really words.. With all the mistakes, the tragic assumptions made in the history of psychiatry/medicine, it astounds me that Doctors can still have the nerve to mistreat patients because they feel they have the final answer.
I was also accused of causing my infection through S.I.. it was as you said, ludricrous.I felt as though I was having one of those dreams where you try to scream but you have no voice.
Anyway.. I'll leave off now.. It's just that this hit a nerve as I'm still suffering the ramifications, three different types of antibiotics and possible surgery, for something that would have been resoloved with one Doctor visit, in October if I wasn't on psych meds.Take care.

> Take care.Sounds like you have been in the "washing machine". It's getting bad out there:
Just today I saw my internist and he said that I didn't have a Strep infection!! He said he disagreed with the urgent care doc, and told me to stop the doxycycline - and prescribed me an antihistamine in its place.
At this rate I'll have more dxes and controversies than I can handle.
This is the end of the thread.
