seroquel weight gain?

Posted by sleepygirl on May 8, 2005, at 23:22:26

Hey, I'm going to be starting this medication soon. I'm just too often agitated and/or anxious so I hope it brings some relief. I'm curious though about what weight gain I might expect. Anyone who can advise?

If your dose is under 100mg/day, it is very unlikely that you will experience any weight gain. If it is over 400mg/day, then you may notice some weight gain, but it can be prevented by diet and exercise changes. In between these doses, it varies by person.

In my opinion, weight gain caused by seroquel has to do with either increased hunger and/or less figeting, toe-tapping, or other excited/anxious movements (which means fewer calories burned throughout the day). It is not like thyroid problem that cannot be fought by diet and exercise.

I was on 800mg per day and didnt gain any weight at all. Infact I lost weight. Didnt exercise either. Didnt increase my hunger.

Only drugs that have made me gain weight, and did it rapidly too were Avanza (Remeron in America) and Zyprexa. I gained so much weight on zyprexa, something like 25kg which is A LOT! Ive recently lost about 10kg of that and Im feeling so much better about myself. But now because im losing weight so fast im getting really bad stretch marks. I hope they fade. Anyway try not to be too concerned about weight gain, I know its hard but being well is the best thing Im sure. Ive have an eating disorder and gaining the 25kg (which is about 60+ pounds I think) was really upseting. And this happened in only a 2 month period or so, something like that. It was a very short time. I went to being under-weight to overweight in such a short time. After I gained the 25kg though i stopped gaining weight which i found odd, it just kind of stabalised. But thats not the reason why I stopped Zyprexa, it gave me TD which is why i stopped it.
Take care and good luck :)

i agree with aa
i was on 100mg seroquel and didn't gain any weight at all.
on zyprexa now and gained about 18-lbs. the first time i got on it i didn't gain any but i was over weight.
i tacked on an ED and lost tons of weight and when i started zyp again this time i gained weight. i think if you are underweight you have a higher risk of gaining weight with zyprexa.
