1 more ? about trileptal

Posted by woolav on May 22, 2005, at 18:07:23

I have forgotten my pdocs name. FOR REAL...I am on day 2 of trileptal and it seems i am having memory impairment. Plus, I have noticed, I cant drink alcohol like I used to. One drink and thats it, where as before i could drink down 3 martini's....i guess this is just the initial stages of side effects??

hi! Drinking on trileptal is undesirable, but relatively safe, assuming you drink in moderation. That said, in the early stages of treatment, trileptal usually causes some sedation, which alcohol will exacerbate...later on, you may be able to drink a little bit more, but the trileptal-alcohol interaction will probably still lower your tolerance. As for the memory thing...I don't know what to tell you, really. If you're freaked out, you can stop the titration and tell your doc to find something else, or you can bring it up at your next appoitment. Sometimes side-effects like that will happen, though they seem to be rare. Good luck!

I find that the cognitive effects I experienced when I first began taking Trileptal have pretty much disappeared. I am now taking 600mg. At one point, I did reduce the dosage back to 300mg temporarily until the side effects all but disappeared and then titrated again more slowly.
