Decreased Sex Drive from Lexapro, etc.--any sugges

Posted by Dkscully on June 10, 2005, at 12:27:37

Hi everyone... I am in desperate need of help here. I almost lost of my boyfriend of 2.5 years because my sex drive has died and he thinks it means the "spark" is gone from our relationship. I tried Wellbutrin with the Lexapro before, and I couldn't tolerate it because it increased my anxiety too much. Have any of you tried any herbal remedies or anything else over-the-counter that helps? I'm female, by the way! Thanks so much, and I hope to hear from a lot of you SOON!

I've been on so many SSRI's and they all do the same thing - NO ORGASMS, so no sex drive. It's a trade-off. I was basically told by my old pdoc what would you rather have - the mental illness symptoms or the orgasms. One pdoc gave me a prescription for viagara and I'm a woman. It did help, but I don't know if I'd take it now because there's stuff in the media about it causing blindness. You might want to try a tricyclic like Elavil which did help me for awhile (all AD's poop out on me) and no sexual side effects. Another AD which might work...Serzone. I know, it's crummy. GOOD LUCK!

My doctor suggested that I skip a dose of the Lexapro once in a while, and have sex on the night after I skipped. That way there is less Lex in the system, and a higher chance of having a better orgasm. It actually works for me sometimes!

Of course, you should def. talk to your doctor BEFORE trying this. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, it might not be advisable to skip even one dose of the med.

But ask your doctor and see what he/she says...

I posted a little further down because I have the same problem and have never really found a good answer. I am on Wellbutrin but it does not really counter the effect of the lexapro. Seems like most docs are not that concerned. I would be happy to hear of a solution and as I posted later, I wonder if klonopin is such a bad idea to substitute for anxiety instead of lexapro??

I don't think Klonopin will work the same way. I take Zoloft and have the same problem with no sex drive. I think Wellbutrin is the only one that has no sexual side-effects, and I can't take that. I makes me too anxious. I don't know what to do about this problem as well. I am open to suggestions, just like all of you! -L

I'm female, and had some trouble with libido and achieving orgasm, until I started taking Damiana (an herb). It makes me hornier than all get out! They say to take 3 a day, but I only take 1 a day, and that's good for me. I also take Maca, but the sex overdrive didn't kick in until I started on the Damiana, which you can get at any health food store. I'm not on an SSRI, so you might need more.

I hope it helps you!

Very interesting... I'd never heard of Damiana and I live in the area where it's grown. I see that there's also a Damiana liquor. Which gives me an ideal about how to help start a romantic evening :-)
