N,
That is paradoxical reaction to the benzodiazepine -- What is your dose? Any other meds?
This doesn't mean that all benzodiazepines will induce unintended reactions like Xanax, but Xanax and the triaz. BZDs are the most likely to cause odd reactions. Those occasional side-effects aside, Xanax is likely the most addictive; physiologically and/or psychologically. I really have no idea by doctors continue to prescribe it...
I would recommend no benzodiazepines based on personal experiece, but if you insist I would aim for Klonopin or Valium.
Regards,
Matt

I've never taken Xanax on a regular basis but I did take ATivan for a long time. For the first few years, it had that kind of effect. I'd take it at say, 10pm. For the next 2hours or so, I'd have all kinds of energy and motivation. I'd clean the house, write my papers for schoool, etc. Then I'd start to get drowsy and could fall right asleep. No wonder I got addicted to it!
What causes this?

I have had this effect often whe taking benzos and other drugs that usually would cause a relaxing effect. (pain meds)
I think it is that I am exhausted and overwhelmed by my anxiety level and upon being relieved of it I feel energized.
Anxiety is a very heavy load to shoulder and being overstimulated in general just causes me to just shut down. Take away that and I often find myself feeling refreshed as though I have had a short nap.Peace,
Kaye

Perhaps what you experience is a phenomenon known as disinhibition. This can also happen with alcohol. For some people, instead of numbing the neurons that are excitatory, these drugs work to numb only the neurons that inhibitory (inhibit the excitatory neurons from firing), thus allowing the excitatory neurons to run wild. So too can the person taking the disinhibiting substance.
That's a pretty lame explanation. I hope it makes some sense. Disinhibition is what is known as a paradoxical reaction and occurs in a minority of people. They are just wired differently.

After you read it, you can explain it to me!
