Not a fan of Lunesta

Posted by laurenjb on July 2, 2005, at 2:52:30

I took Lunesta (1mg) last night for the first time for my Parnate-induced insomnia and hated it. I slept for about an hour and then was up for the rest of the night. It also left a disgusting taste in my mouth which is still lingering even though I took the pill over 24 hours ago. I would still have been willing to try it again tonight if I had not had one of my most depressed days in a long time today -- cried a lot and wanted to die. Ironically, I just wanted to sleep to get past those feelings and of course, couldn't. Anyway, based on past postings about Lunesta increasing depression, I think I'm going to try melatonin as a sleep aid. Any other suggestions/stories about similar experiences? Take care, Lauren

Lunesta comes in 1, 2, and 3mg. I have always had bad insomnia, I currently take 4mg. I can concur with the "disgusting taste"... its kinda metallic, although I have gotten used to it -- its sorta a reminder to me actually when it starts to be effective so I can head up to bed.
I would give it another try or ask your doctor for a higher dose. The metallic taste really should dissappear after the night, but everyone's experience is different.

There is always also Ambien, which although hasn't been FDA approved for longterm use, I certainly have taken 10-20mg for a long period of time and depending on your doctor, they may also feel that is a valid use.

Sonata is a third, although for me it wasn't strong enough; its also a try and maybe again, your doctor may know the right strength of it.

As for melatonin, remember it is a hormone, so just be aware of its possible mix with psychiatric conditions.

Just my 2c,

Hope you feel better

Old Thread says put it in a capsule and no bad taste. But 3mg is a standard dose. Fondlly, Phillipa

Lauren, how much Parnate are you on? This morning I took my daily dose when I woke up at 3am. I am only taking 10mg..... I was reading an old thread this morning where someone said that she had bad insomnia from 5mg......Hoping, eventually to get deep sleep. I can't really take it any earlier.

Hi Declan: I am on 30mg of Parnate but about to go up to 40mg with the eventual goal of 60mg because the depression is not under control. My doctor gave me Risperdal yesterday and I got a decent's night sleep on 30mg. Does 10mg even do anything for you? Are you on anything else for the depression? I feel for you re: the insomnia -- besides the Risperdal, the only thing that has worked for me is 20mg Ambien, but I feel like I got a better night's sleep on the Risperdal. I'll be pulling for you! Take care, Lauren

Sorry, it's Restoril I took last night -- not Risperdal. Hard to keep them all straight!

Restoril is temazepam, right? Presumably a lot nicer than Risperdal.
The 10mg Parnate was potentiated by the 400mg SAMe that I've taken for ages. By day 4 I was feeling agitated and irritated. Today is the first day without SAMe and that feeling is gone. I still notice the Parnate, but then I don't have bad depression. Just the anhedonic, passive and resentful thing.
And I can always go up to 20mg.
Maybe sleep will be better tonight.
Declan
