Picking a Psychiatrist?

Posted by lynn970 on September 30, 2005, at 16:03:07

Ok. This is probably supposed to be on the Psychology board, but I posted there and got no response. So I will try here.

What is a neuro Pyschiatrist. I am picking a doctor and the number I called had an answering machine, saying that the doctor was a Neuro-Psychiatrist.

Lynn an excellent question. I've passed a lot of doctor's offices that say this is what the doc is. And hopefully I'll be picking a new one soon. If we get our mortgage and move. Keep fingers crossed okay. But I too would like to know. Hopefully someone who knows will answer. Fondly, Phillipa

I researched it a while back, and a neuro-psychiatrist uses imaging tech (MRI,CT) to help diagnose a paitent, and from there decides what drugs to prescribe. I think you would go to one if you suspected you had brain damage(say from a car accident or stroke). Neuro-psychologist are similiar, except they do a bunch of simple low tech tests with you (using things like flash cards etc.)to assess your cognitive functing, again deciding if & where you have suffered any brain damage. Anyway, I think you usually go to these type of Drs if you are looking to sue for disability money.
I had wondered if they could use fMRIs to help diagnose depression, decide what drugs would work best for you, but from what I read about them (neuro-psychiatrists) on the internet, It didnt sound like they did that. My dream is that in the future imaging will become cheap and sophisticated so that brain scans will commonly be used to diagnose and differentiate different sub-types of depression, and that we wouldnt have to waste time on meds that dont work. Oh well, I guess I'm rambling..

No you're not rambling. Thanks so much. I just assumed they were better than a regular pdoc in prescribing meds. But MRI's and CT's can't tell anything besides if you have a normal brain, no tumors or damage as you say. Oh well. Fondly, Phillipa

I personally would most likely pick a psychiatrist who is an instructor at a medical college, and maintains at least part of his or her practice in a big hospital clinic. The reasons are:

1) Someone like that would be pre-screened by the medical school and probably would be competent.
2) Also, clinics see a lot of patients and the data is generally pooled and available to the other p-docs.
3) If you live in the US, the pdoc will likely accept insurance when you see him or her at the clinic. In other settings, my experience is that most pdocs do not accept insurance as payment in full.
