Hi all,
In case some of you don't know, my main problem is social anxiety and atypical depression (sleep 10 hrs night, always hungry, apathetic, unmotivated). I was on Paxil for 3 yrs (worked great) but it pooped out 8 months ago. Tried 4 SSRI's since then and either had bad side effects or no response.
I'm seeing a new doctor (an Emory University MD) and had my first appt yesterday and he says there is 2 reasons for "poop out."
1) Dopaminergic reduction caused by long term SSRI usage, in which case a dopaminergic drug like Wellbutrin will help the user regain the initial good response
2) Soft Bipolar or subsyndromal bipolarityHe thinks that there is a higher chance that I will respond to Nardil than the other SSRI's, but, even if I do respond, he believes it will someday "poop out" maybe in 6 months or 5 years, no one knows. But, if I do respond, we're going to "ride the wave" for as long as possible before adding anything.
I've never had ANY bipolar-like manic/hypomanic episodes, but I do believe my non-response after an initial good response to an SSRI puts me in the catagory of "subsyndromal bipolarity".
If Nardil doesn't work, he wants me to go back to Paxil (which doesn't work anymore) and add low dose Seroquel. He says adding anti pyschotics is a very common treatment regime nowadays for treatment resistant depression/anxiety.
Has anyone had experience with SSRI Poop Out and have they been stabilized (long term) by either mood stabilizers/antipyschotics/MAOI's? I want something thats going to KEEP me better, not better for a year or two and then worse. He has me convinced that even if Nardil works, it won't work long term!
On a lighter note, I've been on Nardil for 2 days with no side effects. I'll update after a full week.

Hi CK1!
So its begun!
Good that you finally found a doctor willing to give you Nardil.
I have a couple of comments.
I dont think Nardil will necessarily poop out. Lots of people report that it does but many others have been on it for 20+ years and continue to benifit. Also, poop out can be hard to figure-out sometimes. I recently stopped Nardil thinking it was no longer doing enough. Nearly had a full relapse which shown me how much it was still helping.
Side effects can take a while to appear, often coinciding with the benifits. Starting low and raising slowly can lessen severity. Of course I hope that you dont get any, just be prepared and remember that Nardils side effects usually fade with time.
I wish you the very best of luck with it and look forward to reading your progress.
Regards,
Kev.

I'm in college right now and Adderall is amazing for me when I need to study. My doctor says Adderall and Nardil shouldn't be mixed, but I might just buy a blood pressure reader, take an Adderall and see what happens to my blood pressure. If it skyrockets, I can always pop one of those blood pressure reducing tablets under my tongue. Has anyone tried stimulants with an MAOI?

The l-amphetamine in Adderal may make that more hazardous than it would be with Dexedrine. I've taken quite low doses of speed, presumably methamphetamine, with 10mg Parnate. You'd want to be careful.

I think you can take NE reuptake inhibitors.
This is the end of the thread.
