Why do I hear that Xanax is stimulating sometimes

Posted by rjlockhart98 on October 23, 2005, at 13:02:03

at low doses. I like read abstracts, and articles on the net. I read that compared with Ativan (Lorazepam) and Xanax (alprazolam) admistired at low doses. Ativan didnt have much effect but reduced activy, Xanax irronically said was stimulanting through dopamine stimulation, only at low doses .25mg.

Is this true?

I don't have much experience with the benzos but some people do seem to have a "paradoxical" response to them. This may be due to a mechanism called disinhibition.

I think xanax may have minor effects on dopamine and serotonin also, so that's another possibility.

As you mentioned dosage is also important. For example, Remeron is typically sedating at lower doses and stimulating at higher ones. Seems like you may be talking about the opposite effect here.

Matt, when I first took xanax it relieved my anxiety so I could function well. At the time I was taking .25mg and when I tried .5mg it was much to sedating for me. Fondly, Phillipa

I have also heard that Xanax can be stimulating. I think that it's because anxiety can really wear you out and make one feel tired. If you can take enough Xanax to calm down, but not enough to make you tired, that would be ideal.
