My doc gave me samples of Wellbutrin XL 150mg to try for a week before I see her again after the week is up.
I'm curious. Besides the slower absorption of the XL version compared to the SR version, is there any difference in the overall effects? I mean, has anyone heard of someone preferring one to the other? Doing well with one but not with the other?
If I make it through the week I will probably ask for the SR version. But I would appreciate any and all feedback on Wellbturin XL vs SR.
So far, just day one, seems pretty tame to me.

I am on Wellbutrin 300XL and asked my doc what exactly the difference between the two was and he along w/ a pharmacist said the only distinction was the time release factor?. They both said that other than that, there were no differences although from experience on other extended release meds vs reg., I disagree. I know of someone that is on WB XL and mid afternoon feels irritable which she didn't feel on the SR. Although the XL is working for me, everyones body chemistry is so different that what works for one may not work for another. If what you're on is working, I would stick w/ it! I hope you continue to feel better.

They're both biologically equivalent, so that means they're the same, right?
Kinda...
Even though the same amount of the actual medication is getting into your body, and the biggest difference is how rapidly it does so, all the inactive ingredients may have very minor effects that change the way you feel on them. Your doctor or pharmacist may or may not pay attention to what you say about this, and the effects of the drug shouldn't differ (much), but that doesn't mean that different formulations are going to feel the same from the subjective standpoint of the person taking the drugs.
I hope that helps.

Three days into wellbutrin and I definitely do not like it. This is actually about the 4th time I've ever tried it.
I didn't think my motivation could get any worse, but beginning within hours of the first dose I felt absolutely worse. Just wanted to hide. What little interest I had completely vanished. Lots of unexplained dread and fear and loneliness and detachedness, but no anxiety at all. These things did not exist prior to starting wellbutrin. Now on the third day, it's just getting worse.
This happened every other time I tried it. I guess I was just hoping beyond hope that this time would be different.
What it feels like is that somehow wellbutrin shuts down dopamine production...so that even though it does have some slight dopamine reuptake inhibition, it is negated. That's just what it feels like. I hate it. I'm done with it.

In England, where bupropion is used as an aid to smoking cessation but not as an antidepressant, depression has been reported as a side effect of bupropion. Of course, depressive symptoms may be the result of stopping smoking.
A friend of a friend killed himself shortly after starting bupropion.
Kind regards
Ed

Yeah, on the pamphlet of drug information that came with the wellbutrin, one of the side effects listed is depression. Go figure.
I have a pretty reliable pattern with my meds history...if they show a hint of a decent response real early, they end up being pretty good in the long run. If they show a hint of worsening real early, they just get worse and never better.

That's what happened to me. Until my head got used to the XL version, it knocked me down. A few hours after taking it I would feel it hit and I would give out some deep sighs. That's finally over with now. I'm now almost back to normal even after upping the dose. So it makes complete sense to me that depression could be a side effect. I get mellowed out on Wellbutrin while most people get anxiety as a side effect.

I have never had a problem w/ nightmares this severe but since I started WB about 45 days ago, I am having them to the point where I stay awake majority of the night w/ an intense fear that someone is going to come into my home and harm my family?! I have tried many different things to get some sleep w/ no avail. I did not see nightmares listed as a side effect anywhere and if any way possible do not want to start taking Trazadone for sleep again. Any input?

I haven't had nightmares very often as an adult. I started Wellbutrin about 2 weeks ago, and I had a nightmare (similar to yours - home intruder) night before last. I can't be sure, but since I so rarely have nightmares, my guess is that the Wellbutrin was a cause.

Hi,
I was on 200mgm of Wellbutrin SR twice a day when the XL hit the market. I ask my psychiatrist about switching, and he said that he never felt too good about XR meds, because there are so many metabolic and other factors in each individual.
Also, a week does not seem like much time for an AD to be tested. Even for Wellbutrin which has some fairly immediate effects. I have been on just about every type of AD out there and I pretty much have come to the conclusion that one should give any of them three weeks to six weeks MINIUM before making any decisions. Just my opinion

I found a difference too. Seemed like the xl version would poop out half way through the day. Ya I think it comes out in your poops and does not work all the way. I noticed being iratable on the xl version also.
This is the end of the thread.
