Alcohol Anti'D Efficiancy Experiences!!!

Posted by FrequentFryer on December 12, 2005, at 9:05:52

{ALL REPLIES MUCH APPRECIATED}

Hi.
I have been taking med's for the last 3 or 4 years and for atleast 2 of them I have been drinking heavily & had limited success with Re-Uptake Inhibitors. So Im wondering if its partly because of the Alcohol.
Last time I took Effexor I got 95% remmision from my symptoms for about 1.5 weeks then it went down to 0%. From when I started the Effexor I was drinking approx 60 standard drinks per week. I tried a two week break from the alcohol with no luck.
But yeah. I'd like to hear you guys have to say about the subject.

Also Ive consulted a Neurologist on this and he said that theoretically Alcohol shouldn't effect antidepressant's efficiancy... And I pretty much agree with him but...
Theres' been days where I just don't wanna do anything but get the day over & start drinking.
Thats probably when it becomes to much.

Well here’s my opinion for what it’s worth. Alcohol is classified as a depressant. I’ve found that if I have a few beers (I’m a cheap drunk) that I feel emotionally worse the next day. I’ve heard other people on this board mention this as well. With alcohol and any other type of drug of abuse, it’s like a peak and valley. The chemical changes in your brain make you feel better than normal when you are indulging, that’s the peak, but when it wears off other changes occur in your brain that make you feel worse than normal, so you want more of the alcohol to make you feel better.

I know this might sound a bit harsh, but I really have trouble with some of the posts I see that start out “Is it ok to take (name your poison) with (name your current med)”. You have to stop the substance abuse or you don’t stand a snowballs chance in hell of your mental health improving. The stuff that initially made you fell better is now just aggravating the problem. It’s the emotional up and down that you get that is unstabilizing and making your meds ineffective.

I with you well in this hell we share,
The Naught Puppy – Arrogant self proclaimed know it all!!!

Hello, have you considered taking Campral (acamprosate) which would help diminish your cravings for alcohol?
Then the effexor might be able to work.

Hey there FF! Hmm I know what you mean. I've always have had a few drinks on the SSRIs etc and they don't work for me. And I've wondered if there is a link. I have read that drink decreases effieiancy of the SSRIs but I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment infortunately. I'll try and er, google it or something.

Kind regards
Meri.

Drinking alcohol every day surely will make you depressed. Maybe this Neurologist meant having a drink once in a while? Or did you ask him if its ok to get drunk evey day??

google a bit about depression and alcoholism.....

Well all I know is that when I used to drink 6 beers nightly with l0mg paxil and .5xanax I felt really good. And the next day felt well also. This was the most productive time of my life. I functioned the best ever. But since I've quit I've never felt the same. Horrible is all I can say. For me the alchohol didn't act as a depressant. Wonder why I know it's not supposed to be this way? Fondly, Phillipa

No offense, but your neurologist is certainly smart enough to know alcohol is a depressant!! Your meds will work better if you aren't hungover every day.

I'm with Philipa on this one, substitute different meds. I drink every day in the evening and feel much better all day. If I don't drink in the evening I feel like crap the next day.

alcohol is a nervous system depressant, not literally an emotional depressant. the side effects of drinking can certainly be depression, but to say that alcohol actually chemically changes your emotional state - as an anti-depressant does, but opposite - is erroneous.
