My doctor put me on Dexedrine spanules 20mg in the morning with 30mg prozac. This was to counteract the sedating effects of 5mg zyprexa, 2mg clonazepam, and 325mg Valproic Acid. It has worked beautifully in the sense that I feel a marked change in alertness, and almost a slight mania, potentiation of prozac. I wondered if anyone could suggest an alternative that would work reasonably well that I could switch too, once I gain tolerance to dexedrine. Would Bromocriptine be an option..
Chemically I don't know exactly what dexedrine does, is it known?; I have moderate OCD which is exacerbated horribly by provigil, and in the past Ritalin gave me terrible mood swings, but perhaps with the valproic acid this would be less intense I don't know. Could the valproic acid be contributing to my cognitive foggyness, and slowness? I guess so it's an anti epileptic. I just don't want to think I have two good weeks on dexedrine then back to vegetative subsistance. Any suggestions, what a great day..

Hi Ben
Glad to hear you're feeling good :-)
With stimulants, the risk of tolerance may be reduced by taking the MINIMUM effective dose. Have you tried taking less than 20mg?
>slight mania
The dose is too high.
>Chemically I don't know exactly what dexedrine does, is it known?
It releases dopamine and NE. It also inhibits their reuptake.
>Could the valproic acid be contributing to my cognitive foggyness, and slowness?
Yes.
Regards
Ed

Hi Ben,
Glad to see that something is helping you, hope that the dexedrine continues to work indefinately.
I take it you're out of hospital now?

'Note written for Dec 16th, Dexedrine, day 1
Dr. A I feel very good - alert, motivated and eager to work on the Dexedrine, (planning to go work with a friend in Vancouver - I have all confidence, except for the fact that I can't sleep, I have really bad insomnia.
I had to drop out of university because I couldn't find a state between really bad insomnia and sleeping all day being over medicated. In '98 or '99 I could initially sleep on the immovane and function fairly well, three courses, good social life, but it wore off; at the time I was taking immovane for sleep, which is what I gained tolerance to after four months.I've posted about sleep meds:`)
**my sleeping has resolved now on the third day, but it's because I'm gaining rapid tolerance to the dexedrine. I no longer have the charged, energetic, feeling, but I know it was slight mania.

Hi Ben
Tolerance is inevitable if the dose is too high. The lack of sleep will lead you to a 'burn out'.
Were you taking 20mg Dexedrine Spansules as a single dose in the morning? When were you taking it?
