Got script for EMSAM--questions

Posted by valene on May 24, 2006, at 7:55:34

Hi group,

Yesterday my pdoc wrote her first script for EMSAM 6mg and I am afraid to fill it.

My diagnosis GAD with SAD and depression. After reading about EMSam here, I am afraid it will be too activating. My main concern is that I wake up every morning with that awful fear/despair/anxiety feeling and will EMSAm aggravate that? TIA for any input.

Do you take a benzo now for anxiety? EMSAM has given me energy, made me sharper more alert, but I was already getting anxiety relief from klonopin. I don't really know how much it has helped specifically for anxiety, but it's not making it worse.

It was the two meds combined that has worked so well for me (I also have SAD and GAD). I would suspect that EMSAM alone, without a benzo may not be the total solution for GAD/SAD, but maybe. Everyone is different and some do well on Parnate for anxiety and its very activating I hear.

Anyway, I wouldn't stress to much, if you don't like the way you're feeling you can take the patch off and since selegiline has such a short half life your side effects, if any, should go away quickly. Good luck. Rob

Yes I meant to say that I also take xanax, 2mg or less. Thanks for your answer, Rob. I have been quite worried about the morning stuff. I'm glad it is helping you!

Val I think you will need a long acting one like klonopin or valium or a much higher dose of xanax. Don't know though. When are you planning to start. Love Phillipa

Phillipa, I would tend to agree with you about a longer-acting benzo, but xanax dosing with me can be twice a day - I can take it at 8a.m. and not take another one until 7pm, plus I have been on xanax for many years. I hesitate to make a change now. When I first began xanax, I took 2mg every night believe it or not, once a day dosing.

I plan to take the script in today. Some new drugs need a Prior Authorization form filled out by your doc. if they are not on the insurance company's formulary, so I will find out later.
Thanks for your comments!
Val

Wow that's incredible. Sometimes when I was involved in things I didn't need it that often and could skip the dose entirely. Love Phillipa

I know that morning feeling you describe. It caused me to hide in bathrooms when I went to work or school...ugh. I haven't had that feeling in a long time because I have had not much of any feeling with the SRI's. Now with the EMSAM, I have feeling back but not the awful kind you describe. It is somewhat activating for me but I need that now but it is not the awful anxiety activiting in the morning hell that I used to get. I really like the patch. Good luck to you!

Donna
