prozac , clearing out of system - how long

Posted by mike lynch on June 15, 2006, at 23:58:40

I keep on getting conflicting reports online.. I have not taken one dose of prozac for about 25 days, I am not weaning myself off I am going cold turkey and have experienced 0 withdrawal effects. Withdrawal is never a huge problem anyway- even with paxil. I'm just wondering how many days should it take for the drug to completely clear out, so I know that my current state of mind or mood is in no way being influenced by the drug. I am eager to see how I am without any therapuetic dose of medicine in my system. I am feeling content now, even after 18 days but I am still wondering if it is because the prozac is still lingering in my system.. I am afraid I'm getting false hope that I can survive without this med, when in fact the med just hasn't had time to fully leave my system

Hang in there Mike. I may take 3 to 4 weeks to wash out. Keep your nutrients up, fish oil, folate, B-vits, C, a good multi-vitamin.

warm regards, Jake.

The half life is roughly 7 days. So if you took 20mg on a Monday for example, the next monday there would be 10mg in your system. The next monday after that, 5mg. The next monday after that, 2.5mg. And so on. Most of it is gone by 30 days, but there will still be trace amounts up to 6 to 8 weeks. When I stopped prozac cold turkey the main withdrawal I had was muscle spasms and shakiness. The drug wasn't completely gone for about 6 weeks.

What makes things take even longer is that the metabolite, norfluoxetine (which is also an SSRI), has a half-life in the body of about 9 days. So if by "out of your system" you mean, say, < 1 mg left, it will take about 8 weeks. So believe blueberry.

I would think it would depend on high the dose was too. Love Phillipa

Good point, Phillipa,
I was assuming 20 mg/day.
