How long should I give clomipramine/anafranil???

Posted by kizzie on June 21, 2006, at 8:42:40

Hi - I hope someone can give me some advice.
I had Post Natal Depression with severe anxiety 7 years ago. Got better but couldnt stop the paxil Id been taking. Tried lots of times over 2/3 years. Eventually did switch to prozac but when I stopped (slow withdrawal) I fell into very deep depression.

Took clomipramine (75mg) and eventually got better. Over time slowly reduced clomipramine.

But now back in same position. Severe depression/panic attacks/anxiety/ suicidal thoughts. Not able to work/look after children etc.

I have been back on clomipramine now for 3 weeks. (50mg for 1 week / 75mg for 3 days). I cant take more than 75mg because of blood pressure problems.

How long should I give it before I know if clomipramine is going to work again. I know last time it took quite a while. But if anything Im getting worse.

Ive been reading the messages here for a while and everyone seems so supportive.

Can anyone offer me any advice? (Im in the UK)>

Paxil is known to have a very bad withdrawal profile....

OK. Help is needed, now! Please inform people of your suffering, and, if all is too much, check yourself into a psychiatric ward.

Really? Are you sure? They may decrease in time. What specific problem with BP?

OK...6 weeks, and, if possible, try to raise dose higher, under doctors supervision. Also, forget about all your responsibilities and allocate them to another person if possible. Seek as much help as possible.

I'm very sorry you are suffering. Clomipramine is a very good drug, so things should turn around soon. Also, consider using a drug like Xanax to help you. Please don't be scared of this drug, I have been on it for years, and if they are treated sensibly are excellant drugs.

Please ask any further advice, and, above all, NEVER GIVE IN!

God Bless,
Ace

Ace - thankyou so much for answering.

Last time when I took 100mg my blood pressure went very low / pulse very high and I kept collapsing so drs said take max 75mg.

I am seeing a psychiatrist but he doesnt advise me very much. Just says that i can swap meds 'if you want to'.

I am just praying that the clomipramine will kick in again. I had been on a tiny dose (10mg) for 6 months before stopping and had been fine but my body/mind now seems incapable of working without ad's.

I am so detached from everything but my mother now is helping with my children because I just cant do it.

(Normally i am very functional person. I have a senior job in the media/ i llok after my home/children.)

Thankyou again for replying to me.

OK, best we keep it at 75mg for now.

A lot of psychiatrists are indeed like this. They are very much overwhelmed, but that is no excuse. Just remember you can see a caring GP too - just want you to feel cared for.

Ok I'm sure it will but how about we speed up the response and also get a more robust antidepressant reaction. Along with Clom. try the flowing

1. Xanax- 0.5-2mg
2. Lithium - 1 gram, titrate slowly
3. Remeron...great med! 15mg
4. Seroquel - 25-200mg
5. Risperidone - 0.5-2mg
6. Zyprexa...2.5mg-5mg

All of these have great potential and I could list 20 more!
