1st I would like to thank all those people who so kindly have answered my previous questions.
And I would like to know where can I find out more about the role of AD in metabolism and weight gain/loss like studies, research, etc. And since more than one of you should be a Psychiatrist by now I would love to hear from you, I believe some may be more knowledgeble than many graduated Psychitrists....a lot of you have studied and researched so much that like the movie : Lorenzo's oil" which was based on a real story ..the parents of this very sick little boy studied so hard to find a cure that eventually found it, something that no Dr. could do , the father of the little boy was granted a medical honorary diploma for helping the medical comunity and millions of people who suffer from this disease...Now if you suffer from depresion please DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE..I've seen it a 100 times and always end up crying.

I think there is confusion on the parts of docs on why people gain wt. I hear them say well the person feels better so they eat more. But I've seen pts gains lots of wt not eating more. And I know of no research but would like to see some. Love Phillipa

See that is not my case..I was not deppesed at all..and the meds ( Effexor) was prescribed for ADHD b/c Concerta didn't help. My problem with ADHD ( even though I've alwasys had it since I was a kid..and achieved my goals) began really with my married life that even though is very happy I sometimes felt "Overwhelmed" with 2 kids one with ADHD..which for me was a challenge, work, housework etc.. So Effexor was the magic pill that made me less anxious and more organized. But after a year on it ( no other meds) I started gaining weight and it won't go away no matter what I do.Did this really mess up my metabolism?? Thanks..Susana M

There are some meds, such as Lithium which can affect your thyroid ... and you become hypothyroid. Your metabolism slows down and you gain weight.

Susana,
I took Effexor for 5 months and gained 20 pounds, which is about a pound a week. I was NOT eating much more and had also ramped up my exercise. It definitely lowered my metabolic rate. As soon as I stopped taking Effexor I stopped gaining weight while continuing eating/exercising as I was when on Effexor.
If I were you, I'd ask to go on a different med.
