Hi all,
I'm doing pretty well on my current AD/ anxiolytic combination of 90 mg cymbalta, 12.5 mg seroquel and 200 mg provigilmy pupils are pretty dilated. they contract slightly in bright light. I don't notice any vision problems.
Is pupil dilation a bad thing? should I be wearing sunglasses? which med might be responsible?
yours,
-belladonna

I had it years ago when I was on a tricyclic AD, which is an anticholinergic, which can cause this along with a whole host of annoying side effects, like dry mouth. I looked like I was really spacey and I was very self conscious of it. I don't think anyone else noticed it.
Provigil may be the cause, I don't think its something to worry about, but I would let your doc know about it. Did you just notice it and did you recently increase any of your meds?

Cymbalta caused this for me and lots of other babblers. Cecilia

Interesting signoff -- pupil dilation is normally associated with belladonna related compounds such as the anticholinergics like Cogentin and Akineton. If this occurs long term, sunglasses might not be a bad idea, especially if you notice a physical change in vision.
Normally if you've been to an opthamolgist and they dilate your pupils with atropine, they usually give temporary sunglasses to a patient. I can't speak with any great knowledge but I imagine that logically it would probably let more light in and the rational choice in the daytime would be sunglasses especially with this summers' weather. Ask your doctor.

Okay, thanks everyone!
I'm not sure which med could be responsible. I only noticed it recently when I wore contact lenses to do some outdoor activities. My guess is provigil, but my understanding is that provigil has a short half-life, so I'm not sure why the pupils would be dilated around the clock, since I only take one dose a day.
my left eye is slightly more dilated than my right eye. I'm probably the only one who notices, but it does give me that kind of crazy-cat look (miow!)
yxibow, I'm so glad someone noticed my signoff. Isn't it amusing that ladies used to take belladonna to be pretty? Also, did you know that when we smile, our pupils dilate ever so slightly? Maybe my dilated pupils make me look more friendly. (that would be better than looking more stoned, at any rate!)

I think...the only "bad" part is that pupil dialation is associated with drug use...but that's not exactly something to worry about or something most people would notice- unless you are concerned about people wondering about you and drugs.

I'm way too nerdy-two-shoes to be suspected of drug use!

Fantastic! Then if no one comes up with any medical issue related to dialated pupils- and I will be surprised if they do- I would expect you have nothing to worry about.> I'm way too nerdy-two-shoes to be suspected of drug use!

Hey there
I had an eye injury whereby the iris filled up with blood but anyway the upshot was that at the hospital they paralysed my pupil with atropine for over 6 weeks, so it was properly paralysed (ie the pupil dilation was massive) - they didn't advise me to take any precautions re: the sun or anything. Although it has to be said I was living in the North of Scotland at the time and it was winter, so strong sunlight wasn't much of an issue.
Nobody really noticed the pupil thing to be honest. And I would have had one pupil massively dilated and the other normal. Although I couldn't see out of the paralysed pupil properly so I was abit more clumsy than usual.
Kind regards
Meri
