nardil vs. parnate

Posted by mworkman on August 1, 2006, at 13:58:04

What are the pros and cons of parnate vs. nardil? Like how do they compare. I especially looking for how they work for social anxiety. Also things like motivation, concentration, and side effects. Thanks.

Generally, Nardil has more weight gain issues, and Parnate is more problematic from a hypertensive crisis standpoint. Both of them are noted for causing insomnia; although, Parnate is probably slightly worse. Nardil can cause hepatotoxicity, but this is relatively rare. Both are quite good for social anxiety. I personally find Nardil to be a superior antidepressant, but others respond better to Parnate.

My pdoc has said that Parnate tends to be more activating and Nardil more sedating, in general.

However, this is by no means true for everyone. Parnate can be very sedating, and Nardil not so sedating.

Parnate definitely interferes with depth of sleep for many people, which can lead to tiredness. Weight problems are more common on Nardil.
