I was on Lamictal for Bi-Polar and the lamictal was great at first, then after 3 months I started skin sores and mouth sores, to the point my tongue has doubled in size. Some MD's mention Stevens-Johnson but no lab or biopsys have been done. Does anyone have any pictures to post with this severe delayed reaction Please?

This just recently came up and the answer was to stop the lamictal. Have you called your pdoc? I think you should now. The swollen tongue could be the start of an anafalactic reaction. Maybe call the ER or go in? Love Phillipa

Yes,Phillipa, I have been to three or four Dr.s the last two weeks and no one can tell me what it is or will it go away or continue to grow. The ENT did a good exam yesterday and said he felt no cancer so I thanked God right away. He suggested I see if I can go to a clinic in Jacksonville and get a good workup . Alot has to do with my HMO Insurance if approved I am sure...they ordered the "Magic Mouth Wash" I need to have it made up today and he said I have a Glossitis INC Abscess and did not need an antibiotic. My career was nursing my whole working life, and to go on this long and with this many MD's when will I really know and are they willing to find out? I feel the drug company should be held accountable for not instructing the providers in their territories with pictures of possible oral sores...and how to treat and the serious of it should be really spelled out and have the patient sign a form that they have read and have been given a copy of this side effect. I did contact the research lab for Glasco Smith and Klein myself and they would like a formed consent to follow-up as a case study if indeed the medicine should be used at all. My Son feels I have been medically wrong treated with no diagnosis given, time delays and sent to different specialist that said they don't really know why I am here, but only because the PCP does not know what to do with me. Where is our health care going?

SJS is nothing to mess around with. If left to progress, it can result in irreversible tissue loss (death). Don't leave it to people here to research it for you. Seek out a good dermatologist.

Or simply stop taking the Lamictal and make decisions based upon the changes seen in the presentation of the lesions and tongue swelling. It may take several days to see a difference.
I must stress that a swollen tongue is a symptom of SJS. Along with the lesions of the skin and oral mucosa, this makes for a pretty strong case for SJS. If I were in your position, I would not hesitate to stop taking the Lamictal.

My doctor also cautioned about mouth sores when I was taking this. I agree with Scott.Todd

SJS is rare, but there have been others here who experienced mouth sores on Lamictal.
Definitely I would suggest, based in the experiences of people here, stop Lamictal. See if mouth lesions resolve.
If not, I would go to a dermatologist. SJS , while very rare, is serious. Although you've seen a physican who would, I hope, have caught it, you should seek further treatment especially if the lesions don't go away.

I had sores from Lamictal, but they were like the ones I get from most meds, especially Effexor XR, but Prozac, Paxil and the others gave me some painful mouth sores.

I had a reaction to this drug that had it remained unchecked could have progressed to sjs.
SJS is rare but potentially dangerous reactions to this medication are not.
I used to jump on posts describing what I now know to be potential early sjs reactions but it seemed like my advice to stop the med and seek care would be followed by others with a quite laissez-faire attitude toward the reaction.
This was so alarming to me as even though I caught my problem quite early it set me back health wise and consequently mood-wise by 6+ months. I have kind of washed my hands of the whole mess and avoid even responding to the folks I see again and again asking about reactions to Lamictal.
I guess my point is....please err on the side of caution when advising others about Lamictal reactions.
Personally, I have found dangerous reactions to be not so rare with this drug and speaking from experience-The cure is not much better than the disease. (halting a sjs reaction)
Namely HIGH doses of Prednisone. That stuff was hard on me in many ways and took a long time to recover from.
I'm sure I am polarized on this subject due to my experience but am convinced that these people need to be pointed to the ER with a print out of SJS to hand to the Dr. (they may not know about SJs esp. with Lamictal and wrong treatment coulde worsen the condition severly)
Sorry for the rambling post. Just wanted to get this off my chest.Peace,
Kaye
