fainting due to panic?

Posted by qqqsimmons on September 15, 2006, at 11:01:02

has anyone ever fainted after hearing about a severely mentally ill person? an acquaintance of mine was telling me about his social work with some schizo-types, and five minutes after the conversation i passed out.

i'm guessing that i overly empathize with these types and develop a fear of going nuts. anyone ever faint due to a fear of losing one's mind?

i suppose low blood sugar and/or dehydration could've been a factor (i'd just finished walking a round of golf).

but i also almost fainted and went to an emergency room the day after seeing The Aviator and watching the portrayal of Howard Hughes.

my family has a trend towards fainting at the sight of blood, but this is ridiculous. anyone experience this? any suggestions on how to get over this?

I am convinced that anxiety can trigger passing out. It did so for me once in college. It sounds like, given what you've mentioned, you may be suffering from Panic Disorder. What you NEED to know is, (a) you won't go crazy, (b) there is help. Might be best to talk to a psychologist as well as rule anything out medically with your physician or pdoc. Best wishes and prayers!

I have panic disorder and it sounds like symptoms I've had. With panic, there is an almost constant fear of fainting, since there is so much light-headedness. I asked a friend of mine, who is a therapist, if people do actually faint from anxiety (or just think they are going to-I knew that was very, very common) and he said he had several clients that would pass out several times a day (I didn't find that comforting, BTW :>})

So, another vote for panic under emotionally stressful circumstances (maybe your bp drops). As was wisely said, see the doc for the small chance it might be something else. Best of luck!
