Why seretonin

Posted by mattye on October 5, 2006, at 13:50:11

Before starting on Lexapro, I would have obsessive anxious thoughts. They would take over my mind and make me very fearful and depressed. The crazy thing is that I KNEW rationally that I was blowing things out of proportion and I was just obsessing about ridiculous things. Even though I knew this, I could not stop my brain from going over the same thought again and again like a broken record. Now medicated, I am able to just let these thoughts go and divert my attention to something else. The thoughts have less power to create fear.

What I am trying to understand is how tricking your brain into thinking it has more seretonin can create such a dramatic change in thought patterns. I mean, there are hundreds of neurotransmitters floating around up there. I tried remeron and wellbutrin, which effect norepinepherine and dopamine, but neither of these meds did much good. Why seretonin?

Guess that's what your brain is lacking. Love Phillipa

Since the mode of action of all psychoactive medications are not known, it could be many things that are modified by your treatment. It's good to hear your getting improvement. Best wishes.

The first couple days I was in a state of extreme agitation and panic on 2.5 mg a day in the morning. Then all the sudden on day 3 it kicked in and I was feeling great on 5 mgs. I still get anxious thoughts, but its like they have lost their power to make me panic. I am able to put them in perspective and I don't "catastrophize" them. Interestingly, I was logically able to do this before the medication. It was like I KNEW I was making a mountain out of a molehill. But knowing this didn't stop my brain from making the mountain.
