Ok - I feel like I have tried everything.
SSRIs work great for my depression, but all of them bother my bladder (frequent urination, pain, spasms, etc.) and they usually make me hypomanic.
So, out of desperation, I tried 30mg of Cymbalta this week. It has helped some, but not a lot. Plus - I am getting frequent urination, the urge to go NOW - can't wait, etc.
Wellbutrin makes me feel aggressive (gets my adreneline up).
I don't know what to take anymore.
What about St. John's Wort or SAM-e - would those things bother my bladder too?
I can't take a drug and deal with this awful side effect!

Hi, Trish.
It's GREAT that you get a good effect from SSRIs! I personally would do whatever I could to stick with an effective med.
Have you discussed DETROL® (tolterodine tartrate) with your doctor? It's used for "overactive bladder" like the symptoms you describe, and I know it helped my mother.

I do not know how to phrase this with out sounding a bit snarky--but if SSRIs 'work great for my depression" and the most significant complication is frequent urination and bladder spasms you may well be on the upside of treatment. I grant your symptoms can be annoying and at times painful but so be it. Have you discussed with your physician the possibility of a med that specifically eases bladder pressure or a consult with a urologist to address this side effect. I am delighted you haqve found a med that works for your depression--please do not give it up without more aggressively trying to manage the bladder problems. My Best fca

I'm sorry I agree as I can get no SSRI or other meds as well to work for me. I'll trade places anytime. Love Phillipa

I would not recommend trying Sam-E. Studies show that it induces mania, even in people who are unipolar. Mania is not a temporary condition that goes away when you stop taking the pill.
St. John's Wort is a milder, and probably safer, antidepressant, but it also has more minor side effects. It also interacts with just about every drug on the market.
