Sweating caused by Nardil, anything to prevent it?

Posted by Enigma on November 2, 2006, at 11:23:41

The sweating caused by Nardil is making my life miserable. Now that it's cold out, I can barely do anything outside, or risk getting sick. I already got sick once due to this, and was in bed for a week (no lie - was sleeping 20 hours a day).
My primary care doc didn't even know how to treat it, since I showed no other symptoms. Odd.

If I vacuum a carpet, I soak my shirt. I change shirts 3 times a day or more depending what I'm doing. I can sweat from the tiniest exersion (forget excersise - mood's not there anyway)

Any drug I've heard of, my doc says I can't take with Nardil. Summer was even worse, but at least then I didn't get sick.

How am I going to snowblow the driveway with a soaking wet shirt under my jacket? Going in to change it every 2 seconds isn't too practical, and I just sweat up the new shirt. I'll be ill all winter. Forget about winter sports too (not that I'm happy enough to perform them though, like I used to).

Anyone know anything that will help?

It's always the same place too. Forhead, back of neck, and back. Surprisingly enough, never the underarms! I need help! Please advise.

Also, for any treatment resistant people like me where only MAOI's have helped (a little), had tricyclics helped at all. I'm thinking of dumping Nardil to try one of those. I'm only tried MANY SSRI's, (other types like Wellbutrin, etc), MAOI's like Emsam, Parnate, and Nardil.

I didn't know Nardil caused sweating. What is your next choice. But does it help your depression? Number one in my book. Love Phillipa

I wish I had an answer for you, because I have the same problem. Mine might not be quite so severe as yours, but it's enough to really make me miserable. And besides being uncomfortable, it's really embarrassing. Plus, there are times I simply have to have cool air on me, and if anyone else is around, it causes temperature "wars".

You know, none of the docs I've ever mentioned this to ever seemed to take it seriously. Or maybe they just don't have anything to offer, so they just kind of ignore it. I don't know. I see my new pdoc again in about a month, and I'll make a point of asking about it again and asking for something for relief. I'll pass along anything I learn.

As far as sweating and cold...I've a bit of luck with garments made for sports or active lifestyles that purport to "wick away" the sweat. I can't think of the name of the fiber at the moment, but it does decrease that wet feeling against the skin and works well as an inner layer. As long as you can dry off and change quickly (somewhere warm) when you get inside, it might help a bit.

Take care,

gg

I didn't get get the quantity of perspiration on certain AD's but the odour was atrocious. I would just get out of the shower toweling myself off and start smelling like a dead skunk!

When I was on Celexa 60mg + Gamanil 210mg, I sweated VERY heavily. I was always dripping sweat off my forehead and my shirts were soaked through.

Things I found helpful....

1. Wearing pale coloured shirts - the colour difference between the wet areas and the dry areas was less noticeable.

2. Explaining to the people I worked with that I always sweated this much and not to worry eg. no, I don't have a fever.

3. An electric fan

4. Using plenty of deodorant. If I only used a small amount it 'washed off' and didn't last all day. I didn't benefit from antiperspirant because it irritated my skin.

Methadone is frightful for sweating, especially for men. My sweat had a sour sick smell. I never knew if it was my body trying to get rid of the (for want of a better word) toxins, or whether my temperature balance had been upset.
Many drugs increase sweating, but few decrease it.
