Dopamine/Serotonin drugs...

Posted by TrishP on November 25, 2006, at 8:01:42

Ok - I think I've figured out that drugs that effect my dopamone (Wellbutrin, Abiify, etc.) give me a great sex drive, but also cause rage - regardless of the dose.

SSRIs give me urinary/bladder pain.

Is there a drug that I can take that will give me that happy, nice, calm, not-depressed feeling like the SSRIs, without effecting my dopamine and making me fly into a rage?

Why does it have to be one or the other?

Or - do I have to take both at the same time?!

I'm really getting frustrated here.

I can relate. I take 150 mg Wellbutrin and 15 mg Prozac to try to balance effects and side effects. If I go up in dose with either med, I get in trouble. So maybe low doses of each? Just a thought...

I am in the EXACT same boat! I would love to hear all the responses to this as well. Next week, I am going to begin Remeron. I will keep you updated!

I have EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM (sort of).

All SSRIs cause my Interstitial Cystitis to flare up (bladder pain, urinary frequency/urgency), AND they all cause nocturnal enuresis (bed-wetting). For years and years, doctors just kept switching me from SSRI to SSRI. And it even happened on meds like Lamictal and Seroquel.

All drugs that affect norepinephrine cause RAGE. Desipramine, Nortriptyline ... I was a total screaming psychopath.

The one drug I can say does not cause any rage and actually "cured" my Interstitial Cystitis (while I was on it) was Parnate. I could take Ambien and Seroquel (drugs that previously caused severe bladder pain and IC symptoms to flare) and have no problems, no enuresis, no nothing.

Adderall also did this for me, but I was abusing it and taking supra-therapeutic doses.

Have you thought of trying Desipramine, which has limited DA and 5-HT effects and mostly inhibits NE? It's also a tricyclic so it has anticholinergic effects. Actually, have you tried any of the tricyclics? They're used to treat bladder pain in IC and they also have limited dopaminergic actions.

I've got another idea...are you unhappy with going into a rage or is it the people around you? If it is the people around you, maybe we should be discussing what meds THEY should be taking. :>} Problem ownership and all that...

This is going to sound weird. And your doctor probably wouldn't like the idea.

Have you tried Kira st johns wort? You get dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, gaba, and glutamate. And you get opioid action that relaxes the bladder. It has to be the Kira brand. It is the LI160 formula used in most clinical trials. Sold at Rite-Aid.

If lexapro worked, then maybe just go back to it and somehow work on the bladder thing.

Even without the rage, I like the idea of getting off abilify, as long as it doesn't put you in jeopardy of major depression with suicidal thoughts. Longterm antipsychotic use is just begging for trouble down the road.

Maybe 5mg lexapro and 300mg Kira sjw. Or just Kira by itself at 600mg.

I don't know. It's tough. I wish I had more ideas right this moment. If I think of some I'll re-post. Hopefully someone will come up with more ideas. Without trial and error there really is no way to tell.

There is the outside possibility that there is some bipolar stuff going on here and that abilify sparked off a bad type of mania.

How about Cymbalta w/o abilify?

Cymbalta is activating, and also has some pain-reduction properties. It seems, in some cases, to cause urinary retention-- or was being considered for some urinary problems-- but not always-- didn't with me.

I don't know how that would affect your urinary tract problems, but maybe it's worth investigating.

The other possibilities is an MAOI. Have you ever considered Nardil or Parnate, or perhaps the recent one, Emsam?

For me, Cymbalta caused exactly the same bladder problems as all other SSRIs/SNRIs.
