Cortisol Anxiety-Can someone explain?

Posted by Tom Twilight on November 28, 2006, at 16:09:24

I've often wondered if my Cortisol levels are to high?
Logically I would have thought that high cortisol levels would cause anxiety.

It appears however that the relationship between Cortisol and Anxiety is not so straight forward as I thought.
Post Traumatic Stress disorder is associated with low Cortisol levels, although I'm not quite sure why!

So the bottom line is:
Firstly were can I go in the UK to get my Cortisol levels tested?
Assuming my Cortisol levels are to high, what can be done about it.

I know Remeron lowers Cortisol, and some supplements and herbs can also be effective.....

You can do a morning and evening blood cortisol level test, you can also do a saliva test, which I think alo t of people think is a better way to check, I believe your doc can order that and I know you can get it done by places on the net. I remeber a few months back I saw alot on this cortisol stuff on here..

Do you carry a lot of fat around your abdomen?

Cortisol causes fat to be deposited there (instead of arms and legs etc...)

If you do, you might want to get it checked, just talk to your doctor.

Personally, I've always heard that stress causes cortisol to rise and not the other way around, but they might feedback on each other.
