Geodon increase depression??

Posted by lymom3 on December 31, 2006, at 16:27:56

Anyone experience this? I was on Geodon for a little over 2 weeks when hopelessness and crying set in. I have only had that real bad like that once before and that was when I was on Cymbalta. I stopped the Geodon per the pdoc's instructions but how long does it take for this to get out of my system? I am restless but don't feel like doing anything. I feel like I'm crawling out of my skin. I don't know how much longer I can take feeling this way. Anyone with similar experiences?

Lisa

I've never tried geodon, but it is my unscientifically-proven impression that vigorous excercise (like cardio, or a really hard yoga class) helps with various drug withdrawals, both in making them more bearable and in shortening duration. The endorphins are helpful. And again, this is only my own personal theory- I don't know if there's any documentation to back it up. In any case, this helped me with getting off zyprexa relatively quickly and easily. Good luck!

>I feel like I'm crawling out of my skin.

That sounds a lot like akathisia, a common side effect of APs. There's some more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akathisia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geodon

I had a similar problem with Abilify and it disappeared within a day of me stopping it. Geodon has a half-life of about 2-5 hours so it should be out of your system within a day.

How come seroquel is not on that list of atypical antipsychotics? Love Phillipa

Quintal the list of antipsychotics from wilapekia(sp?), or is it a different formulation? I learn something new everyday on this board. Love Phillipa

If you mean this list:
__________________________________________________

Causes
Akathisia is almost always causes as a side effect of certain drugs - commonly seen in the antipsychotics, and less so in the others listed below:

typical or atypical antipsychotics, such as haloperidol (Haldol®) and droperidol, olanzapine (Zyprexa®), aripiprazole (Abilify®); Pimozide is especially infamous for causing akathisia;
SSRIs, such as paroxetine (Paxil®)
Other antidepressants, such as the tricyclics and trazodone
certain antihistamines, such as promethazine and diphenhydramine (Benadryl®);
certain anti-emetic drugs, particularly the dopamine blockers (e.g. metoclopramide (Reglan®) and prochlorperazine (Compazine®)).
__________________________________________________

Then I think it may just be the author's random choice of a range antipsychotics. There's no particular reason s/he did not include Seroquel that I'm aware of.

Any psychiatric drug can induce or worsen depression. Weird huh? I have had a lot of meds do that to me.

I wonder how long the withdrawals will last? Hopefully a week or less?

Antipsychotics are nasty.

Hell ya. When I first read your post, I wondered if it was mine for a second (my name is also Lisa). I think Cymbalta made me worse as well, but not as bad as the Geodon.
FYI: I also had bad experiences on others in the antipsychotic class: Abilify, Zyprexa, & Seroquel.
I was only on Geodon for a couple of week until I became really bad. Sorry I don't have any good news from my experience - after a week I couldn't take it anymore (I was missing work & going crazy). I opted for ECT- but at least it only took 4 to feel better.
Good luck!

It's odd that you post that. I've never felt this bad ever in my life. I've been off the Geodon for 5 days now. My tdoc uttered the ECT letters tonight at our session. That scares me too!
