Going off Nardil. Any A.D.'s safe in1 month wash?

Posted by gobagel on February 13, 2007, at 3:58:47

I have posted under a different name previously.

I have been on a combination of Nardil and benzodiazepines for 20 years (off and on.)

My Psychiatrist and I unanimously agreed to stop Nardil. Because of sex disfunction and also fear of drug reaction while in foreign country. (I'm going on a business trip to the orient.) My Dr. fears that Drs. there will be un-familiar with Nardil. Also I wont be able to know Tyramine containing foods. My Dr. worries I'll have a hypertensive crisis. Even though I have not had one reaction yet that was severe enough to go to emergency.

I have been on 60mg/day for about the last 6 months. Higher doses prior to that. Along with Klonopin 4mg/day and Dextroamphetamine 15mg/day. I'm continuing the Dextro. and increased the Klonopin to 6mg/day.

I have been having horrible nightmares. One I dreamed I was fighting off a murderer that was trying to cut off my head I woke up swinging the lampost violently in my bed. I'm affraid to sleep

Other symptoms include a feeling of wanting to cry. Sadness.

Does anyone know what kind of antideppresant can be taken until the Nardil is out of my system? When it's washed out I will start another A.D. SSRI perhaps. Or Cymbalta.

I have heard that Trazodone is safe taken with Nardil. Also some reports of Wellbutrin. There must be others added to the list since I haven't been on Babble in about 2 years.

Advice is desparately needed !!!!

What has your psychiatrist suggested? I would be asking him or her. Does your psychiatrist know about the problems you are having with going off this medication? If not, then I would think he or she would be able to prescribe something to help in the meantime before you go on the new antidepressant.

My Psychiatrist simply stated that there is no other med that can be taken with Nardil for a month. Excpt more Klonopin. She said : "I cant give you anything that wont interact"

Thank you for your response.

Wellbutrin is out, but Lamictal, Topamax, and Lithium are okay. I'm sure there are others. Those are just what I've tried.

I think it's a good decision given your trip, but it's a shame that you have to make that decision because you're on Nardil.

And on a side note, please make sure you post on Admin that you used to post under a different name. http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#names

That is a very very silly thing to say. Many thing can be taken with Nardil.
She obviously has been trained in the med schools which are bamboozled with the SSRI nonsense, and the MAOI scare tactics. She probably is getting kickbacks write now from Eli Lilly......

Get another doctor, and tell her to see a psychiatrist!
