I am staying on Emsam for now, but someone has asked me what was the washout period btw Emsam and Nardil/Parnate?
My pdoc told me there was no washout period between Emsam and Nardil. But that's his opinion, which I trust. However, I do wonder if anybody else has an opinion or knowledge on this subject, which may have yet to been addressed on this board because of the newness of Emsam.
Thanks, Michael

Sir? Lar is fine.
I don't have any concerns about bypassing a washout period, as the mechanisms of action are similar. The only possibility of adverse reactions would arise from metabolic interactions, and I don't know of any.
That said, the Emsam monograph does list both Nardil and Parnate as contraindicated, in combination with Emsam. I believe they are simply covering their *ss, as they do not show any rationale for their inclusion in the list of other antidepressants which would clearly not be wise combinations to consider.
So, familiarize yourself with the symptoms of serotonin syndrome, and press ahead. Alternatively, wait a week to clear the Emsam from your system. You needn't tell your pdoc every little detail, eh? Peace of mind is priceless. For everything else, there's Mastercard®.

what is the washout period between Effexor XR and Nardil? If I still have withdrawal effects should I go ahead and take the Nardil anyway?

Lar I'm changing to Nardil tomorrow night after 7 days Effexor washout. You mention looking out for Serotonin Syndrome. I'm a bit puzzled as the main problem with MAOIs with tyramine-high foods is hypertensive crisis (is that included in serotonin syndrome?) and hypertension has no symptoms. However they list headache. I've never known high BP give me a headache (psychiatric drugs usually make sure I have one of those anyway). But what about too much norepinephrine or dopamine slooshing about? Or GABA or some artificial neurotransmitter both of which Nardil is said to increase or produce respectively?
Incidentally, I hope I don't get so anxiety-free that I go round stroking tigers

Thanks U My Doc didn't know so guessed 10 days. My pharmacist who knows more said 7. But you probably know more than them. But I'm 60, haven't got time for all these washouts, and am running out of time. So I'll try 7 days.

Michael took 1st Nardil last night. Woke up feeling like that colossal squid had been at me. But now (11 am) I don't feel so bad. I still have withdrawal effects from Effexor though so effects are confounded. Talk to you later
