I'm back.. 3 months pregnant and depressed!

Posted by spriggy on June 15, 2007, at 22:16:45

Hey guys,

I'm back ( which is never a good sign- well, I don't mean seeing all of you but when I come here, it's because I've fallen back down into the dumps!)..

I'm 12 weeks pregnant (#3) and since the week prior to me finding out I was pregnant ( around 5 weeks), I have been really, really struggling with depression.

I did this with my other two kiddos but was especially depressed the first 4 months with #2. It was a lot like this time; unmotivated, overwhelming guilt, shame, feelings of failure, becoming "one" with the couch, inability to care for my children and self, etc..

My poor dh is having to take care of the house, kids', and me. Thankfully he is the most patient man in all the world!

I know if I continue like this, I will have no choice but to go on some sort of meds, but I just HATE to do that while pregnant. I've read the "risks" and I feel selfish for even considering it.

And yet, I am not being much of a mother to my other two children now becuase of this depression (and my oldest is special needs; autism).

Does anyone know why I have depression during the first trimester? ( I hope it will go away now that I'm entering the 2nd trimester).

I didn't have a hard time post partum before just in the first 4 months;

Is this hormonal? Is there any info out there.

I can find TONS of stuff on post partum depression but nothing on being depressed WHILE pregnant.

Help.

And thanks!

Spriggy not glad to hear that. I think they divide meds that are safe to take into categories a C is safe. The pregnant ones or those who know will answer I know. Certainly not postmenapausal me. Love Phillipa miss you and ROLF

Spriggy have you tried looking for a good forum that is devoted to moms and everything related, including issues during pregnancy? I've never had kids but through my wide-ranging Internet travels I think I've inadvertently seen a good number of such forums.

(Often when I'm researching anything at all under the sun, I also include a search for posts at forums, because I want actual user experiences with whatever the thing is I'm looking into too.)

I doubt this is of much help but in the off chance you hadn't tried it yet, thought I'd suggest also looking for gathering places of women who are likely to be going through many of the same things.

Even without ever having kids, I can so feel for you. I'd have been in exactly the same place, and more. Best wishes on finding relief!

A LOT of women get depressed during pregnancy. You are definately not alone in that.

It's probably a combination of hormones, the loss of autonomy of one's body and the additional physical and mental stress of pregnancy.

I would talk to your ob/gyn about it at your next appointment - or call and schedule one. The good docs take depression during pregnancy seriously and can help.

Some meds are safe during pregnancy and some are not, your best source of information there would be the ob/gyns who have direct experience with the meds during this time.

take care

Is it really wise to get pregnant if you feel so bad? Will you be able to care for three children?

Spriggy,

I just want to tell you to hang in there. Your hubby is a sweetie. Are you taking high quality fish oil? From everything I've read that is safe during pregnancy. And get plenty of rest.
