Think I need an anti-depression drug, what kind?

Posted by Happyflower 1 :-) on September 2, 2007, at 9:04:01

Gonna talk to my family doctor about it and he always asks what I would like. LOL It's true, when I needed something to help me calm down once in a while, he askes what I wanted. I said I don't know, I haven't really studied drugs yet.

Is there a good AD that can help you lose weight, make you smarter, and make you a wonderful person? Okay, maybe just help with mild depression, losing weight would be a bonus.

I think I might get my throid checked too, I am seeing some of the signs of this again. I had it after the birth of my daughter 12 years ago, but I only needed snthroid for a short time because my body went back to normal.

Any ideas ???? Please tell me the common side effects too.

In my opinion, the all-round best AD is good-old bad-old simple straight-forward unremarkable

(drum roll)

.......

Zoloft!

IMO, Zoloft is the kinder, gentler of the AD's both, going on and off..

Yeah, I take Sarafem, lowest dose every 2 weeks before my period with no side effects noticed. I am actually getting the Prozac since it is the same thing and much much cheeper generic.

Do you think my doc would just keep me on it full time or up the dose as well?

so far 2 say Zoloft, 1 prozac, and one Lexapro?

I would say, try St John's Wort. Its really good and just as effective as the conventional SSRI ADs, but without any of the scary side effects (like weight gain, and bone loss, and things like that). I've tried both conventional ADs (celexa, prozac, wellbutrin, a reversible MAOI) and St John's wort was the best. You do need to treat it like a conventional med through - it needs a proper taper, and you need to watch for drug interactions, and stuff like that.

Actually, it was my family doctor that suggested it to me in the first place. Our docs in the UK don't have the pressures from drug sales reps that the docs do in the US do (or so I'm led to believe) so they are free to suggest things that aren't actually marketed by Big Pharma.

Anyway, about the PMS thing - I find magnesium supplements really really help with my PMS. I even know when I'm getting PMS that I'm low in magnesium. Magnesium is just as important as calium, but it doesn't get all the attention, poor magnesium. Do you also get random little muscle twitches?

So. I would give both magnesium and St John's Wort a try. Or even rhodiola.....that too, is really great mood booster. You'll lose weight on that for sure, and its actually good for you, I mean contains lots of nice plant chemicals that help your body funciton better....anyway.

If you need anymore help, head over to alternative......

Meri

I like Lexapro, but whatever AD u decide to take, give it 1 to 2 months to get the full effect. For me it takes a full 2 months so be patient. Oh and start off slow too. I cut the pill in 1/4's at first, and slowley increase, best wishes

Well if the SSRI's work for you I'd go with zoloft or luvox. No weight gain on luvox for me. But each body is different and I think it depends how bad the depression is. If slight then maybe ST John's wart to see if not a conventional one. But I don't like them. But that is me. Good luck on whatever you decide to try. Phillipa

you take prozac 10 mgs right?

My guess is they would keep you on that for two weeks, then ramp you up to 20 mgs sustained.

I don't know though.

People are right though, zoloft might make you lose weight.

Never tried lexapro.

I would stay away from St. Johns Wort. Especially since you already take an AD some of the time (that's just my opinion take it for what it's worth).

Seldom.

You're so right serotonin syndrome. On second thought since you already know you tolerate prozac I think that would be a good option and like you said everyday to start. See what happens you may not have to up the dose. Phillipa

Historically, Lexapro has a very low side effect ratio compared to others and works very well if its your first go around (or 2nd) with AD's....I would stay away from most everything else if youre looking to lose weight...most of them pack on the pounds...i take lexapro and really like it...

I think I need to do some research on all of this and see what I come up with. Then when my doc askes me what I want, I can give him an educated answer and see if he agree's. Athough is is just a family doc, he is really good, takes time with you and everything. First I need to get a thyroid test, and I might as well get a total blood workup, it has been over a year.
