Abilify for bipolar?

Posted by JayBTV2 on October 30, 2007, at 9:57:57

Does anyone have any experience using Abilify to counter the low end of Bipolar? I'm currently taking Lamictal (200mg) and Depakote (250mg) but lately I'm falling back into depression a bit.

Abilify is one of the few meds I haven't tried and some people seem to say it really helps.

Any insight would be appreciated...

-Jay

Hi

It is often prescribed for bipolar. But it is listed as a tranquilizer. It is meant to counter hypomania/mania. I don't think it will help depression, but maybe someone else has had experience with the med as an antidepressant.

Hi

Here are some old threads on Abilify for depression (at the end of this post). Looks like it has helped a lot of people in that area!

Here is one quote:

Abilify has been my wonder drug! I am on 15mgs. I tried to go off of it one time because I am bipolar and most of my problems are with depression not mania. Well, I got more depressed. I went back on Abilify and I perked right up. I don't have many side effects- it just makes me sleepy so I take it at night, I am a little shaky during the day but that is all.

My reactions to SSRIs (manic or non-responsive) and positive response to atypical antipsychotics (zyprexa at first) got me rediagnosed as bipolar spectrum ... plus I have a most unhealthy dose of PTSD going back 6 years and 20 days or so.

Last January, my mother died and I got depressed enough to be suicidal. When I finally admitted this to my pdoc, he put me on abilify. For me, it worked almost immediately on pulling me out of my depression (I'm on 10mg/d). Your mileage may vary.

Oh, I'm also on Lamictal ... had it increased from 150 to 200mg at the time as well ... but I think the Abilify was the main story. It worked so well at first, we dropped me back down to 5mg a day but it was clear within a few weeks that I needed the other 5mg. Been fine on 10 for the last 8 months.
