Severe Muscle Tension/Seroquel...

Posted by SheilaC on February 5, 2008, at 7:08:56

I am having a big problem. I have been taking 50mg of Seroquel at night for about 4 months and have loved it. It helps me get great sleep, helps with my daytime anxiety and depression - but it is causing really painful neck and shoulder tension.

I've tried Abilify in the past and it did help me sleep and was great for my sex life, but it made me really, really hungry.

SSRIs give me terrible urinary side effects.

Are there any other drugs that I could take that would help with anxiety and sleep disorders.

Last night I took 1mg of Xanax. I hate to take Xanax every night. I am weird in that I can get by on smaller than normal doses. 25mg of Seroquel doesn't seem to help.

Are you sure it is the Seroquel causing the muscle tension? 50mg is quite a small dose. I also take 50mg for sleep and notice no side effects whatsoever, except maybe a bit of morning hangover.

There are lot's of other meds for sleep that you could try: Remeron, trazodone, doxepin, amytryptilline, nortryptilline, etc. Remeron expecially in low doses like 7.5mg to 15mg seems to knock most people out pretty well. None of these are traditional SSRIs so they shouldn't cause the urinary problems you experience on SSRIs.

What about lunesta too? I took 3mg combined with benzos no withdrawal problems. Phillipa

Yes, lunesta, ambien, the Z drugs are also options. I assumed that Sheila was looking to avoid those since she mentioned some tricyclics. But the Z drugs or certain benzos work well short-term for sleep. My experience is that I grow a tolerance to them and they stop working so well.
