stopping klonopin

Posted by wishingstar on April 3, 2008, at 20:48:25

I posted above about my short experience with klonopin. I started it last Friday night and it has increased my self-destructive urges and not touched my anxiety. Spoke with my pdoc yesterday and she advised me to take 1/2 a pill last night, 1/2 tonight, then stop it completely. I've done that. I was only on it for a week so my body I'm sure wasnt terribly used to it yet.

My question is... since dropping the dose, I've felt different, and not in a good way. I felt very silly all day at work today.. saying things I wouldnt normally say, etc. Nothing inappropriate, just a little goofy. More bothersome, since I got home from work several hours ago, I feel MORE anxious than I felt before starting the klonopin and MORE anxious than I did while taking the higher dose! Is this normal, even after just one week of taking it? I'm wondering if it's a side effect of getting off the drug, but is that possible after such a short time? Or at all? I did talk in therapy today about how overwhelmed I've been and this could have been a trigger, but it feels like more than that. I'm feeling desperate. Any thoughts on this?

I agree with all three things didn't she prescibe another one to take it's place? What did she say about controlling the anxiety? Can't leave you hanging???? Phillipa

I havent been back in her office yet... we just spoke on the phone yesterday. My next appt is next Friday, a week from now. The klonopin was the first med I've taken for anxiety except for xanax on very rare occasions (maybe 5 times ever?). I've taken a dozen or more meds for mood, but the anxiety piece is fairly new for me. I guess for those reasons, I dont feel like shes "leaving me hanging".. although it feels like it will be hard to manage for the next week, it's not like this has been an ongoing issue and suddenly I'm left with nothing. It's just the beginning.

I am stepping down on klonopin myself (from 1mg to 0mg). My P-doc advised me to step down a half-dose a week. I know if you step down too quickly your brain does not have enough time to adjust and can cause excess anxiety or worse. I would try lowering the dosage rather than quick cold turkey. How high was your dosage?
