hi i live in the uk and my doctor thinks i may have the limbic type off ADD, which seems to make alot of sense, but she is in no position to make a diagnosis herself so i am being referd to a psychiatrist, however she said there is a debate going on wether adults can have attention deficit disorder, so im worried there is no hope for me, my last psychiatrist treated me with neuroleptics for so called negative symptoms without actually diagnosing me as she wasnt sure what was wrong, and previously i was treated for anxiety and depression for many years by my doctor, i tried every ssri, a few tca's, nardil, snri's with the only improvments coming from the stimulating effects of prozac which made a huge difference before it seemed to lose this effect, ive been on it many times with always the same responce untill i seemed to become imune to it, prozac is a cns stimulant that only adhd meds share, my question is would there be any hope for me to recieve an official diagnosis and get apropiate treatment, i dont know if its true but i heard that in europe ppl feel ADD without hyperactivity does not exist

I feel a lot of people in the USA are being treated for ADD symtoms. And they have an official diagnosis of such. Don't they offer pdocs that could diagnose you properly. Can you focus? Maybe a med like providgil? Love Phillipa

You most certainly can have ADD or ADDHD, I don't think there is any debate in the psychiatric world about this. Sounds like you need a new doc. I certainly would if I was told that by the guy who I'm relying on to make me well.
Certainly a correct diagnosis would seem to be beneficial. But at the same time, it seems most of the conditions people come on this message board for seem to be treated with the same types of meds (i.e. SSRI's, Benzo's, Mood Stabilizers, etc.) I think it all boils down to finding a drug that works well on your symptoms. Certainly a diagnosis such as Bipolar or Schizophrenia would be highly beneficial in a treatment approach. But when it comes to anxiety, depression, nervous disorders, they all seem to all be so closely related that the docs treat with meds as mentioned above or use meds to treat one disorder off label to treat your disorder.
Thats how it works and it's all trial and error. I think many of us believe the meds make us worse. Some have or should I say many have for me, and only the benzos have helped in my case.

have you tried Modafanil? I don't think its even a controlled substance in the UK..I certainly think getting an Rx for that would be easier than getting an Rx for, say, Dexedrine.

I suggest getting a new doctor, someone who is not doubtful as to the existence of a condition you would like to be treated for. The existence of adult ADD is not especially debated.
