I have posted about being on Parnate, and I have been on 40 mg. per day (20 in the a.m. and 20 mg. at noon). This was working very well, and I was not feeling depressed most days. Only once in awhile I would feel low after a difficult therapy session (I go three times per week). So my pdoc/therapist/analyst told me to reduce my Parnate to 20 mg. per day because I started to develop the sense of bugs crawling under my skin at the ankle area, and I could not keep my feet still. I have never heard of this with an MAOI, but once down to 20 mg. it seemed to be relieved. But, after a week I started having days when I would wake up in a profound depression like this morning. I just felt like someone was squeezing my brain, and it hurt so bad. I thought I can't live like this again. So, my doctor says to go up to 30 mg. for now and see how that is. If I need to go up again to 40 mg. and maybe higher, then what to do. Has anyone had this side effect from Parnate? I know it is common with antipsychotic medications, but I am not taking any of those. The only psychotropic medication I am on is Parnate. Thanks

Hi Zeba. I haven't experienced that side effects. Perhaps when you increase your dosage it won't happen again. Here's hoping anyway. Are you on any other type of meds for any other condition you may have?
What does your pdoc think is causing this. I did some googling yesterday, but then daughter and grandkids arrived so haven't been able to get back at it.
It sounds like a very unpleasant sensation. I hope you can find a solution to it so you can get to the dose of Parnate that is theraputic for you. I'm going up to 50 mg shortly as 40 is just not doing much.
Keep us posted!

Thanks for your response. I started on 30 mg. yesterday, and I think I will go back to 40 mg. after I see my pdoc/therapist on Tuesday. He will be gone on vacation for two weeks after that, and so I am not sure what to do if 40 mg. won't be enough now or if I get the sensation back again. I will ask him on Tuesday. I will be on vacation myself for his second week gone and the week after, and so it will be three weeks before we meet again. Mostly I have not worried about that, but with the medication thing, I am more worried about not seeing him. Maybe he will still have access to email. I will have to see.
Re other meds: I take Advair and Spirivahandihaler, and there is supposedly some negative interaction between them and Parnate, but there has only been one case. I also take Cozaar for hypertension, and I take Nexium for GERD. I also take Premarin and Provera for menopause, but I have taken them for years as I went through early menopause for unknown reason. I will investigate further about the advair and parnate. Perhaps this is turning into a problem. Thanks for your help.

I would think you could go from 40 to 50 on your own opinion, thats not really a big jump.
Good luck, though, and keep us posted how you are feeling. Better I hope, Michael

I feel a little better on 30 mg. now. My therapist is on vacation for the next two weeks and said to just stay at 30 mg. I think he believes the depression has to do with more than just the meds. Perhaps he is correct. If I feel more depressed, then I will go up to 40 mg. Thanks for the input.

Did you associate the sensations with RLS? Or did you think it was something completely different?

It is kind of like RLS; my husband has RLS. Only difference is that mine goes away at a lower dose of Parnate. Weird.
