Terrible Anxiety coming off Celexa... Need advice

Posted by LisaDC on October 6, 2008, at 9:30:05

As I said in my first post, I weaned down and now off of my celexa. I followed my doctors instructions and did this weaning over a 2 mos. period of time.

On the third day, I started getting the brain zaps I talked about, which seem to be resolved now. I'm on day #7 today without any of the med in me and my anxiety is very very bad. It's all in my chest, my heart is racing, and I just feel terrible.

Please someone tell me if this is normal, if it will go away, if so, when, and finally is there anything I can do to help it. I'm taking Xanax as needed, but it doesn't seem to be helping. The anxiety is brutal and I can't seem to get rid of it even with the Xanax... I'm actually yawning as I type here from the Xanax sedation, yet the anxiety hasn't been touched. Thanks to anyone who can help me.. Lisa

It will get better....Be careful with the xanak, because that titrate is worse than Cylexa...I would drink lots of water, chamomile tea, eliminate coffee, and B vitamins for now, and exercise. Try to get some aerobic activity in. The worst part is over from the Celexa, but I know the anxiety can be rough.

Is the Anxiety Normal ? It's like debilitating

I had it to some degree with the depression when I started out on the Celexa. The depression seems to be gone, but the Anxiety is relentless and I've called out of work today as I can't sit still, and my heart is racing, it is so uncomfortable.

Is this an indication of a new baseline or this just the withdrawal?

Thank you so much... Lisa

I feel now you should call your pdoc as feel the xanax should cover the anxiety unless the dose is very low? Love Phillipa

Hi Lisa:

Sorry you are going through such a terrible time. Maybe try clonazepam instead of Xanax? Clonazepam (Klonipin in the U.S.) lasts much longer in the body, and may crush your anxiety better. Maybe try a small dose of Prozac every few days for awhile, as Prozac stays in the body much longer, and getting off it is much easier. Let us know how you do...

Best,
Jay :)

I think a beta blocker. Slows down the heart rate, can help you through the anxiety.
The benzo I was allowed just seemed to make me tired, when I was already so fatigued in general, whereas a beta blocker gives me mental and physical relief.

I remember that out of all the AD's I had taken Celexa was the easiest to come off of. It was also the one drug that acted like a sugar pill when I took it and never gave me any side effects either (or helped, for that matter.) I am not downplaying your anxiety at all I guess I am just trying to reassure you that it could be a hell of a lot worse. I am trying to come off Cymbalta now which is the equivalant of hell on earth.
