Lamictal + Apathy?

Posted by amdew717 on November 10, 2008, at 9:56:34

Hello friends,
i'm a 55 year old male with atypical depression. my pdoc recently tried me on Lithium, but i noticed that i lost all my enthusiasm and interest in things that normally bring me joy. besides that, i felt i had increased anxiety, and not only no sex drive, but almost a feeling of repulsion towards sex. i did not have any sex while i was taking lithium, either with another person or with myself.

I was wondering if Lamictal will give me this same effect with apathy, disinterest, anxiety & no sex drive.

Thanks very much,
James

Lamictal stabilizes mood "from the bottom up," which makes it a good choice for treating a depressive episode. Lithium generally works "from the top down," which makes it a good choice for treating a manic episode. IMHO, Lamictal is worth a try. Are you taking any other medications besides lithium?

Another option would be an MAOI. Atypical depression responds well to MAOIs.

You won't know until you try!

Lamictal made my depression worse ... apathetic. But we all respond differently.

Have you tried many other antidepressants? I don't think you'd respond the same to lamotragine, but i'm not sure why to try it unless you've tried quite a lot of other things first. Generally it has a low side effect profile though.

Well, they both have claim to be true mood stabilizers. Lithium is particularly effective for euphoric mania, but also probably helps depressive phase. Lamotragine is seen as mostly helpful for cycling, not for strong manic phases. It also is seen as helpful for depressive phases.
