Valium vs Klonopin....

Posted by jms600 on January 4, 2009, at 14:13:55

Hi everyone

I've been taking Valium on and off for the last few years now. Generally it has helped my anxiety tremendously and got me through some very dark times indeed, however, within the past 6 months or so it appears that I have built tolerance to the drug. Basically I have two questions:

1) Is it safe to take more than 10mg in ONE dose? I generally don't - if not ever - take more than one dose in any one day. I've read that up to 30mg can be taken in one day but in DIVIDED doses. Could I take 15-20mg in one dose if I take no more for the rest of the day??

2) Is Valium really the best benzo for anxiety? A lot of people on here seem to go for Klonopin. Would Klonopin be more suitable for anxiety? I guess I need something that's long acting and doesn't make me too drowsy (OK - all benzos do that), but basically I guess I'd use it a lot more in the day then during the evening / night.

Any advice anyone?

Thanks

At one time was taking 20mg of valium at a time. Now down to l0mg at night with extra 2.5 of 5mg if wake-up and .5 of xanax. I've noticed the same thing about others preferring klonopin. Wonder if anyone has any good links of comparisons? Love Phillipa

I used to take valium. I have taken klonopin for the last seveal years for anxiety. I feel it is stronger and longer lasting than valium. Some say it causes depression. That means your dose is to high. It's a powerful drug and to much can cause depression. Lowering the amount usually takes care of that.

I took 30mg of Valium a day for a year, usually in one dose. It wasn't an issue.

Interesting because ive suspected this last year that klonapin was giving me suicidal thoughts.. i've never had such bad thoughts before even when depressed.
I never said to my pdoc that i suspected it was the klonapin though incase he made me stop taking it and the other benzos hadn't worked, the only 1 i hadnt been on was xanax but i thought there was no way he would give it to me and was scared of sounding like a drug addict if i asked for it. A couple weeks ago i finally gave in and talked to him about it and am now on xanax 3mg per day and am less depressed and not a single suicidal thought so far.

Hi JMS,

Here's a great site to help you evaluate your decision:

http://www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=13263&name=VALIUM

In the past, I've taken Ativan, Xanax, and Klonopin. I couldn't tolerate Klonopin--it made me so tired, I couldn't keep my eyes open. Of course it's better than anxiety torture, but I couldn't function while taking this drug. Maybe the dose they gave me was to high, but other benzos I was presecribed the lowest dose always. Ativan and Xanax had close to no side effects for me, however, but I didn't take it for very long.

I know you know how to use a website and all, but I meant to send you the info. about Klonopin, not Valium.

And I've read a mood stabalizer anyone know how? Xanax was great for many years small dose with valium. No didn't escalate doses either. Phillipa

Hi jms600..i would like to answer your second question. Subject to speaking to your treating doctor, ask he/she opinion on ativan/lorazepam . I have been taking it with mixed results for a month, not to much drowzy my end. I have much the same regards the complexities of your own health..chronic/dep GAD etc..apart from the nasty minor/major triggers i have experienced some peace,it is after all a drug. All food for thought much like anything on this site. At anytime jms600 whenever or wherever possible peace of mind to you. paddo
