Pristiq

Posted by kedwardsccnn on January 19, 2009, at 10:04:40

I was put on Pristique two months ago and for the first time in my LIFE I actually feel "normal". I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder 20 years ago and have been on just about every prescription in the book, and nothing ever worked. They may have worked for a little while, but I never quite felt "myself". I truly feel Pristiq is the right drug for me.
Unfortunately, my first two months on Pristiq were samples and a free 1 month trial from the manufacturer and I had to purchase my own prescription on Friday. I found out that my insurance carrier would not cover the drug and I have to pay $176 a month on my own. I cannot afford this. Are there any other alternatives to this drug that work in a similar manner? I have called my Primary Care Physician, but he has not returned my calls, and I feel that although he knows my medical health best, he may not be knowledgeable enough in this particular matter.

Hi,

You can try Effexor.
It's the same drug.

Here's what I have found about Pristiq in The Carlat Psychiatry Report:

As compared to Effexor,
it has no greater efficacy,
it is no easier to dose,
it is no better tolerated at comparable doses,
it has no meaningful drug interaction advantage.

Best regards,
X-ray

I was under the impression that it had less side effects than effexor? Could the drug manufacturer through you doc supply you with the pristiq. Isn't there a needy meds site? Phillipa

Hi Philippa,

The Carlat Psychiatry Report is skeptical to the supposed advantages of Pristic.
I have not been on any of these drugs myself.

Best regards,
X-ray

P.S. I am a subscriber to TCPR (an unbiased monthly covering all things psychiatric).

If there is a "needy meds" site, how do I find it? Anyone know how to get Pristiq at a lower cost?

Since it's made by Wyeth, here's a link to their website page, where there is an application you can download to apply for assistance if you cannot afford your medications:

http://www.wyeth.com/contact?rid=/wyeth_html/home/shared/footer/Patient/contact_patient_assist.html

And there is also: http://www.needymeds.org/

more of a clearinghouse resource of info on many programs.

Hope those help.

Hey X-ray,
Thanks for the heads-up on TCPR. Just for the record in case anyone else is reading this, the website is here:

http://www.thecarlatreport.com/

Some of the online reports are free. However, it looks as though you have to pay for some of the others. It looks like good reading but I'll have to stick to the free pages for a while!

Take care,
Reggie BoStar
