Cymbalta is messing up my mind and I want to quit

Posted by HappyChaiTea on February 15, 2009, at 16:11:20

I have an appointment to talk to my doctor on Monday about quitting but after hearing all the horror of withdrawal, I am not too sure.

It just sucks that this med is one that finally works for me, but if I can't remember stuff for school, it is no good for me.

Has anyone slowly gotten off of it and it wasn't so bad? I am scared now. Should I ask my doct about taking something to help with the withdrawal.

HappyCT,

I got off of it and it was bad. But I did it without the aid of other stuff. So you might ask your pdoc for prozac to help. I think prozac is one a lot of people use and it is not that hard to get off.

If you don't use another drug like that, just supplements like Omega 3, magnesium, and benedryl to help with the withdrawals.

Now I did not take my wellbutrin for a few days and I did not have any withdrawals. But I did with cymbalta and lexapro.

Omega 3 does help with depression, and a few others I have recently been reading in my research.

If you are taking it for that. If you want I will look up the specifics. I have researched so much my head is swimming with facts, supplements and which does what.

go slowly with the withdrawal though is my advice.
the best rule is decrease by 10% only. Leave it there for several days until you see how your system reacts. If all ok, another 10% reduction. And so on.

good luck.

rsk

Believe it not no problems getting off 60mg after three months went to 30mg and then took it a bit more slowly. No withdrawal. Phillipa

Are you thinking of trying another antidepressant? I went from 60 mg. cymbalta to 100 mg. zoloft and had absolutely no discontinuation symptoms. Cymbalta was not a good experience for me and I was concerned about the withdrawals, but was pleasantly surprised when I did the switch.

Yes, I had no problem discontinuing Cymbalta, nor Effexor at an earlier time.

Hey thanks for your advice and support.

I am thinking of going off AD's completely if my Doc thinks it is a good idea.
I will taper very slowly and ask him if there is something to take for withdrawal symptoms.
I have only ever had Prozac and Cymbalta, so maybe another one would be worth a try. I do know that the cymbalta doesn't' seem to help with my PMS, like Prozac did.

Since prozac has such a long half life don't they just give for a few days for PMS? Maybe you could do that? Phillipa

Well when I first started to take it, (was Sarafem), he only prescribed that I take it for 2 weeks before my period. Then when I was depressed, he first just had me take it everyday.

If I go off Cymbalta w/o another AD, I will ask him to take Prozac again from my bad PMS because it really works for me.

That makes perfect sense. Refresh my memory why did you go off the prozac? Love Phillipa

Because it was working for my depression, so the doct switched me to Cymbalta which is working for my depression.

opps, I meant the Prozac worked for my PMS, but not my depression. I told ya my brain isnt' working right! lol
Only the Cymbalta is working for my depression, if I am still depressed. I could be feeling better because the depression is over too. That is why I am weaning off Cymbalta because of my memory problems, and the fact my depression might be over.
