5 HTP or SAM-E????

Posted by Cseagraves on March 8, 2009, at 14:43:48

Hi to all!!!

Was thinking about trying one of these along with St. John's Wort.

Was wondering about others experience with either of these and could someone explain to me what the difference is between the two.
Thanks,

Courtney

SAM-e, by a long shot. Extremely more beneficial in many ways for your body and mind. 5htp doesn't really offer anything in comparison.

Rapid onset too.

Not sure what dose SJW you are taking, but go easy on SAM-e first few weeks until you have a good feel for it. Might want to stay at 200mg for a couple weeks before even thinking about doing any other changes.

In a clinical study high dose sAM-e was combined with ongoing therapeutic doses of Lexapro in patients with inadequate response to Lexapro. 50% of them responded to the addition of SAm-e, and serotonin syndrome did not happen.

5htp is a lot cheaper. That's about its only benefit. But honestly, at other forums, many people like SAMe and not many have much luck with 5htp. Most people do find it helps sleep, but not much else.

Phillipa,

Hey Woman!!

Have been reading alot on the internet. Seems that Sam-E works better for depression and 5htp works better for anxiety.

So for me, I think I'll be trying a combination of 5-htp and St. Johns Wort. Am also trying to come off my final med which is xanax. Have read several reports that in Europe and some other countries that they use Valerian to help with weening off of xanax. Will also be trying to use Valerian in combo with 5htp for sleep.

Am still researching to find appropriate dosages for me knowing that I have a low tolerance for meds in general.

From what I have found so far:

50 mg of 5-htp 3 times per day (morning, afternoon and before bed.

300 mg of St. Johns Wort (morning and afternoon)
I'll probably start out at 200mgs and work up.

Anywhere from 300-600 mgs of Valerian for sleep.

I'll probably cut some of the Valerian pills in smaller pieces to use during the day while withdrawing off of the xanax.

Let me know if you come up with anything..

Take care.

Courtney:-)))

Phillipa -

FYI - I just looked up the reviews of 5-htp on revolutionhealth.com and they were all very encouraging. Look them up when you get a chance.

Also looked up reviews for sam-e. Seems like 5-htp got much better reviews.

There is a theoretical risk that 5-HTP could cause heart valve damage (similar to fenfluramine), so I would stay away from it. If you want to elevate synaptic concentrations of serotonin, SSRIs are probably the best choice (though I'm certainly not fond of them).

I've tried SAMe, St. John's Wort, and 5-HTP and none of them seemed to do anything for me, not even a placebo effect...Pharms are the only things that have made any difference for me.
