Switching MAOI- chinese food in between transition

Posted by mickapoo on April 4, 2009, at 7:19:29

Sorry for the bad English- it only let me fit in so many characters.

I'm currently on Nardil, and switching to Parnate. I've weaned down from 75mg, to 30mg. If get down to 0mg, and before I start the Parnate, am I immediately able to have foods on the non-allowable list? Like Chinese food (soy sauce)? Or would I need to be off Nardil for 2 weeks first?

Thank you!

I'm sure theres a washout period but I don't know how long it is. Anyone else? Sounds like you've really missed soy sauce!

well, over the course of the time while taking less nardil and the time not taking it, your MAO slowly builds back up. the amount of tyramine needed for bp changes is variable anyway, so its really hard to say. when i had run out of parnate though, after a week i ate a bunch of stir fries until i got my parnate shipment. and not everyone who is on an MAOI will even have a problem eating cheese/soy sauce/etc.

Conventional wisdom says you can still have a tyramine reaction up to 14 days after quitting an irreversible MAOI, so I'd go with that if you want to err on the safe side.
