Seroquel made me bad...Why oh why?

Posted by Phidippus on December 25, 2009, at 15:29:30

Yesterday I took a 600 mg dose of Seroquel and felt fine for a couple hours, then BAM! I was hit with a severe fear sensation/dissociative moment then I freaked out and became very agitated. I spent the night in the ER. What the f*ck? Did Seroquel worsen my OCD?

I'm also sorry that happened to you. Did you start on that high dose or gradually work up it 600mg. Seroquel was a wash for me also. On one day and docs took me off it. Phillipa

I hate Seroquel and think it is way over-prescribed nowadays. If you are not in a bipolar mania or suffering from bipolar agitation and can't sleep or you are psychotic, stay away from this poison.

Phiddipus,

I'm really sorry you had such an experience. I can't answer your question about seroquel and ocd. I hope you are feeling alright today--and taking care of yourself and getting answers.

P, Seroquel is nicknamed 'Baby Heroin' and 'Susie Q' by (really desperate) folks who use it in large doses to get some kind of high out of it.

Did I hear right that you're on Prozac now? 'Cause Prozac would inhibit Seroquel's metabolization a little bit, which may not have helped.

How's the Prozac working out, by the way? I wanted to send you a babblemail about it but I can't for the life of me find out how to do it. This website was built in the Dark Ages.

What did they say to you in the ER? Should you drop the dose?

I think because antipsychotics are so casually and commonly prescribed, it is easy to overlook their wide ranging functions and potency. When we enter the antipsychotic category, we are entering the realm of some bizarre meds that do a lot of stuff in the brain. Sometimes good, sometimes bad.

On one hand they block some dopamine receptors and serotonin receptors, helping to block out excess activity so we can feel calm. But at the same time they also stimulate more release of new dopamine and norepinephrine. There is crosstalk between receptors and different neurotransmitters. So maybe the blocking that was happening was not enough or not in the right place to prevent the stimulation that was happening. ??? Just thinking out loud.

Really sorry for your experience. The ER is not a fun place to be. Getting messed up on any drug is scarey as hell.

I've had enough terrifying experiences like yours that I am even gunshy in trying a new vitamin for pete's sake.

You didn't just take 600mg of Seroquel as your first dosing of this drug, did you?

The major metabolite of Seroquel (quetiapine) is norquetiapine. Norquetiapine is a potent norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, a property that can produce activation. This can serve to make some people irritable or hostile. It might make sense that there be a delay in the onset of your negative reaction if it is indeed the norquetiapine metabolite that is to blame.
